Bit by bit they learned what was happening. No one person had the time to tell them much and no one person seemed to know much worth telling, but as they pushed their way past rushing men and women, past frightened children being herded into presumably safer parts of Ashwina, the picture began to emerge, and Lochlan’s face darkened.
“Why the fuck would they do it?” he finally exploded, tucked into a corner of a wide bay on one of the higher levels of the docks. Up here, the people who passed him were all young, eyes locked forward with grim determination. One or two of them slapped Lochlan’s shoulder, nodding. For Adam, they spared barely a glance. In some ways, the Naming had changed nothing, and at the point of crisis he felt more lost and useless than ever.
There were some specific reasons for that.
“Because of me?” Adam said softly, and he said it like a question, but it wasn’t one. “Because of what I stole?” Lochlan was already shaking his head, but Adam persisted. “It has to be me, Lock. You said they don’t usually go this far, and I know they don’t.”
Lochlan looked at him, his expression unreadable, before he let out a sigh. “It doesn’t matter. It’s happening now, so—”
“Lock!”
They both turned. Kae was striding toward them, a young, powerfully built woman at his side. “There you are. Adam, I’d hoped you were in your quarters, but when I had someone go to check, I was—”
“What’s our status?” Lochlan cut in, and Adam felt a quick rush of gratitude. Whether or not Lochlan had meant to save him the trouble of explaining, Adam wasn’t going to turn him down. He pulled his cloak tighter around himself.
“None of the damage is too serious, yet,” Kae said. “We think they’re trying to disable us rather than destroy us outright, but so far they haven’t tried to contact us and they haven’t responded to any of our hails.”
“Bastards.” The woman beside Kae spat onto the floor. Kae started slightly, as if he had only just remembered she was there.
“Adam, this is Xiao-xing, my gunner— The larger fighters have them, and that’s what I fly. Xing, this is…well, you’ve heard about him. We’ll have to save the pleasantries for another time. Lock, you’ve got to iron up and get out there. We’re putting most of the people we have into ships, and Suzaku’s sending two more wings our way.”
“Are they catching any heat?”
“Not yet. But ‘yet’ is probably the word.” Kae gave Adam a grim smile. “Looks like your celebration has to be cut short, mitr. Your friends are angry they weren’t invited. You should go back to your quarters as soon as you can.”
Something low and sullen settled into Adam’s gut—even after the Naming, here he was, pushed aside, and yes, he was naked and still faintly dizzy, but that didn’t make the sullen thing any lighter. He opened his mouth, perhaps to protest, when a fist made of light and heat slammed into his back and pitched him into darkness.
