In his shop, Mallumunce the Merchant heard the sudden boom of sound high in the upper palaces of the city. It was a frightening roar, to be sure, although of laughter rather than anger. Of course, he knew what it was. Mind you, it was not quite as he might have imagined it. Even at this distance from the palace, there was no mistaking the tone of the laughter. Unexpectedly, it was that of a woman.

“The bottle, the bottle!” he cried. “Already it is open. Well, well, the lady is now possessed of what she desired. She did state categorically that she wanted a strong djinn.”
