Chapter Sixteen

Breaking the Fourth Wall

Shooting the video for ‘Self’ in February 2020, a song from The Future Bites, about the nature of self-identity in the social media age. After the basic shoot was done, director Miles Skarin spent the best part of a year applying the deep fake processing to have me morph into various public figures whilst singing the song.

NOTES

Steven

Mick.

Mick

Steven, how are you?

Steven

Very good, sir. How are you?

Mick

I’m okay. Thank you very much. I’m so sorry for the delay this morning.

Steven

Not at all, we were supposed to do this on Tuesday and I cancelled that one. Anyway, we said one of us might need to take a rain check so it’s totally fine.

Mick

Cool. All right—

Steven

How was the dentist appointment?

Mick

Oh, horrendous, horrendous. And expensive, and we’d like you to come back for more. I’m like an old car. You take it in for one thing and then they find out it’s all going to hell. The main thing was, I was in agony, absolute agony, like one side of my face—

Steven

During the treatment or before?

Mick

No, before, that’s why I rang them. So I walked into it, they were like, ‘Oh, so you missed your annual check-up in September. So now we’re going to make you pay.’ Anyway—

Steven

While I was waiting for you I was thinking about the idea to have one of the lists as my 20 perfect songs . . .

Mick

You’ve changed your mind?

Steven

Well, it’s not a matter of changing my mind, it’s just inevitably I keep thinking of more and more things that really can’t not be in that list. Plus, I realised that it can’t just be about perfect songs, there has to be non-songs too. Meaning things that aren’t really . . . you couldn’t describe it as a song—

Mick

Right.

Steven

Like ‘Bela Lugosi’s Dead’ by Bauhaus.

Mick

Right, right.

Steven

Or ‘Hallogallo’ by Neu!. It’s not a song, is it? But these are pieces of music that I love and that made a big impact on me.

Mick

What’s the tally as it stands now then?

Steven

Ah, well, at one point last night I had a list of over 300, and could have easily gone on adding more, it was getting ridiculous. But I’m going to prune it down to 100. That seems like a more realistic number.

Mick

Well, I like that. Yeah, we can have you saying you tried to sum it up in twenty perfect songs, but . . .

Steven

. . . it proved impossible. It is impossible. How can you sum up a whole lifetime of listening in twenty . . . it’s just—

Mick

You can’t. Do you ever listen to Desert Island Discs?

Steven

I’ve heard it occasionally, over the years, yeah.

Mick

I used to hear it in the car because I’d be taking the dogs for a walk at that time of the morning, and you’re thinking what songs would I pick? But the thought of only having eight songs to listen to on a desert island . . . I mean I can’t . .
