Chapter 15

John Wisdom walked into the kitchen just before nine o’clock, and the first thing he did was pour himself a glass of wine. Lily was taking the empty wine bottle that the Carlsons and Rose had made quick work of to the recycling bin when she met him in the kitchen. She said, “Hey, John. Are you just getting home?” Lily found it increasingly strange that her brother-in-law seemed to work late most every night. Well, he had the last two nights. Lily wondered: Was that a pattern? Was it anything to be concerned with? Was it any of my business?

“Yes, another dental emergency then I stayed and finished up some paperwork.”

“Ah, okay.” Lily put the bottle in the recycling bin on the back porch and poured herself a glass of water.

“Care to join me?” John held up his glass of wine before taking another healthy sip.

“No thanks, but those people in there, the Carlsons, I think that’s their name, would sure take care of that for you.” Lily laughed at the lushes in the front room gabbing away, slurring their words a bit more as the night wore on.

“Oh yeah, they’re great!” John topped off his glass then grabbed the bottle around the neck. He headed to the living room to join them, but Lily stopped him.

“May I ask you something about Brian Butcher? Do you know him?”

“Sure, Brian and Bree. They’re patients of mine. He has a partial plate, baseball accident knocked out two teeth, and she’s a whitening nut. Her teeth are going to become transparent if she doesn’t watch it.” He shook his head and took another sip.

Lily made a mental note to not let her teeth go to pot or the whole town would know exactly what procedures she had done, thanks to the yappy dentist who happened to be her brother-in-law. “Okay,” she said and drew out the word while she thought a moment. I really should strike now, while his lips are flapping, she decided. “So, did you know that Bree and Greg, the dead guy, were, you know? Fooling around?” For some reason the idea of talking about fornication with John seemed downright filthy. He was the father of her niece and nephew, for pity’s sake. Lily ducked her head then turned and picked up the sponge and wiped at the already sparkling sink.

“Oh yeah, sure. Everybody knows that.”

Lily turned to face him even though she could see John’s reflection perfectly well in the window over the sink. “So, Brian, Bree’s husband, well, do you think he could have been mad enough about the affair to kill Greg?”

“Whoa! Where’d you come up with that?” John looked at Lily in a way that signaled she might have crossed a line.

“Well, I don’t know. Just wondering. I don’t know these people, remember?” Lily’s haunches were up. She wondered why John thought this was such a strange thing to imagine when other people had talked about it already.

“Yeah, sorry. I see what you mean, I guess, but I just don’t think so.
