“Halloween, 1982—

My dear,

I can only hope this letter reaches you, and that you are unharmed. You cannot imagine my surprise to find that you had disappeared in my absence.

If you are reading this, and you have found your way back, come to this hill on the next full moon. When I know that it is you, I shall reveal myself and collect you. Until then, you must know these things:

1. The town is dangerous to you. Do not go there unless you absolutely must.

2. The only vice humans are prone to more than violence is greed. I have left you with my enchanted bag and coin purse; when in a pinch, scatter gold coins on the ground and run.

3. Likewise, your bag will hold whatever you need to carry no matter how large or heavy, and when you seek inside it, it will always give you the thing you need most.

4. I had to leave my enchanted boots behind and could not find them again. If you have them, do not rely on them too much. They are old and unpredictable. If you click your heels together three times, and the boots feel like cooperating, each step will take you seven leagues. Click your heels three times again to deactivate the spell.

5. Do NOT walk over water.

6. Do NOT touch fire.
