Fifteen
Nothing attacked during our escape, but the feeling of dreadâwe were definitely being watchedâtied my stomach in knots for the ride home. Scout said she would do some research, but she seemed as lost as I felt. This entire situation was weird. Heck, weirder than normal. When you lived in a world that included Aunt Tillie, that was pretty frightening, because ânormalâ was already a slippery slope.
Evan stayed behind to monitor the shadows. I didnât like the idea of him being alone, but he laughed when I voiced my concerns.
Landon checked the locks ten times before we shut down for the night. The guesthouse was warded, so I promised him we would be fine. I didnât sleep well despite my comforting words to him. I was far too agitated, and my dreams were a hodgepodge of dark shadows and screaming meth dealers, and I was still exhausted when I woke the next morning.
âFive more minutes,â Landon mumbled when I moved to slide out of the bed. His arm slipped around me, and he snuggled me tightly against his side. âStay with me.â
I acquiesced, turning so I could bury my face in the hollow of his neck and listen to his rhythmic breathing.
âTell me what youâre thinking,â he said after a few moments of silence.
âI donât know what Iâm thinking.â That was the truth. âThe shadows last night didnât attack, but they could have. So why didnât they?â
âMaybe they were afraid of you.â
âI didnât do anything to fight off the one at the greenhouse. It attacked me, and there was nothing I could do to stop it. I was only saved by a fluke.â
âWell, thank you for putting that in my head so early in the day.â His eyes were dark when he pulled back to look at me. âI didnât need to hear that.â
I couldnât help but laugh. âYouâre so dramatic sometimes.â I poked his cheek. âSpending so much time with my family has turned you into a bit of a drama queen.â
âSpending so much time with your familyâwhich is now my familyâsimply allowed my inner drama queen the opportunity to come out and play. No matter how ridiculous I am, there are always people in the inn who are worse.â
âTrue story.â
âWord.â He bopped his knuckles against mine and grinned. The smile lasted only a few seconds. âI donât like hearing that you were saved by a fluke. Youâre a superwitch and nothing can take you out.â
âOh, if only that were true.â
âI need to believe itâs true, because the alternative is too much to bear.â
I pressed my hand against his chest, reassuring my inner worrywart with the steady beat of his heart, and then forced myself to focus on our current predicament. âMaybe it was Scout,â I suggested. âMaybe they were afraid of her, and thatâs why they didnât attack.â
âShe grabbed one by the throat. Seems it was about to attack her.â
âMaybe.â I wasnât convinced. âOr maybe they were just curious.â
âThe one that attacked you outside the greenhouse was a little more than curious.
