The day was warm already, so Mae left her long black coat in the truck and just wore her black pants, black boots, long-sleeved white dress shirt, and small black continental tie, though she did put on her silk top hat.

Ross, however, kept his long black coat on over his white shirt and wore the grey Stetson as always. In a moment, with Steel leading the way, they left the parking lot and walked the two horses a short way down the street to the strip mall.

A few people stopped to look at them and wave, and of course, Mae waved back. The two horses were impeccably turned out and both the black and the white carriages were decorated with red, white, and blue ribbons and red paper roses. They were fit for any parade or horse show and it was no different for even this small event.

But once they turned the corner and went up the driveway into the vast parking lot, the atmosphere changed.

The place wasn't great. There was no shade at all. The aging buildings that comprised the strip mall had certainly seen better days with their fading plastic signs and peeling paint and crumbling brick. The concrete surface of the lot was cracked and broken in some places and Mae saw that they'd have to avoid potholes as they drove.

The half of the parking lot nearest them was packed with a half-dozen or so carnival rides, a faded Ferris wheel, a rickety carousel, a couple of wildly spinning thrill rides covered with flashing lights, and a little train for the youngest kids. There were booths with games, too, which was no doubt where this thing made most of its money. And at the far end of the carnival setup, near the relatively quiet kiddie train, was the stand that said "Carriage Rides."

Mae had arranged for the mall committee to sell the tickets and just settle up with her later via credit card, and she was glad she had. This was not the best place to be wandering around with a lot of cash and it was not something she liked to do anyway. So, all they had to do was pick up their passengers, take them on one loop around the other half of the parking lot, and come back for another load.

Well, I can't expect every place to be a country club. If I'm going to bring horses to people who never see them, a lot of those people are going to be in neighborhoods like this. I think we can manage for an hour. And we mostly won't be around the crazy rides and the people who like that sort of thing.

It's only for an hour. We can handle almost anything for an hour. Right?
