lane and the doctor stood at the door and watched Johnny approach Sara, who turned to look at him, her face momentarily blank.

“Sara?” Johnny said. He put his hands on the covers. “It looks like you got really hurt.”

Sara watched him, her eyebrows pulled together, and then she nodded and said very quietly, “Something happened to me.”

Edison turned to Lane, astounded. “She can talk!” she whispered.

Lane nodded, smiling. “Yes. Johnny was most perplexed to discover we thought she couldn’t.”

The doctor turned back to look at the children. Johnny had sat down and was looking at Sara’s books. “We heard a big boom when we were at school,” he said.

“Gosh, I’d love to hear the rest of this, but I must go speak with Mrs. Cartwright,” Dr. Edison said.

“Yes, of course. I’ll give this a few more minutes and then join them. All right if I steal a chair from the empty bed?” The little girl with the playground concussion seemed to have gone home.

“Absolutely. Goodness, I feel quite fizzy! What a treat to hear her voice.”
