Chapter 9

Back at the B&B after a lovely walk from Shelia’s, Ally had been expecting to find Lewis prowling about the lounge, but in actual fact, it was empty apart from Rachel who had taken it upon herself to hoover.

“Oh sorry, you didn’t have to.” Ally sighed once she’d turned the contraption off. “I was planning to do it all later this afternoon.”

Rachel dismissed her apology.

“You listen here,” she said, resting a hand on her shoulder. “What else is an oldy like me got but this place? Your grandfather knew I would do anything for it.”

She unplugged the Hoover and wound the cable up.

“Thank you, Rachel,” Ally said stopping her short of the doorway. “I really do appreciate everything you do.”

The woman gave her a broad smile before leaving the room, and Ally went out to find where Lizzy had got to.

She was up in her room, and when Ally asked if she wanted to go with her to the Events Committee meeting, she shook her head and yawned.

“Well about that…” Lizzy put her phone onto the bed, facedown Ally noted, before she looked back up at her face. “Lewis asked if I wanted to go and help him plant some new trees at the edge of the woods near Cavendish and… well, I…”

Oh, so Lizzy already had plans? That was quick.

“Don’t worry,” Ally said pulling the door closed. “That’s great. Cavendish woods is really lovely and—”

Lizzy got up quickly, crossed the room, and held the door open.

“Wait, are you sure? Because I can always tell Lewis we’ll do it tomorrow if you have something planned for us.”

As much as Ally would have loved her friend’s company that afternoon and evening, being selfish wasn’t in her nature. She knew Lizzy would most probably have a better time and experience out meandering with Lewis than the bare excitement of the B&B walls.

“No, you go ahead,” she said quietly pulling the door from her grip. “Honestly, enjoy the rest of your day and come and find me in the apartment when you’re back.”

Lizzy watched her as she closed the door, and she dejectedly made her way down the stairs to the back office. So back to work it was then, and she threw herself into doing her much-loathed accounts.

By the time twilight was just starting to set in, Ally had already finished her books, wiped down the kitchen and prepped for the next day’s breakfast. She’d even managed to make a batch of crumble biscuits and rest them neatly in a medium Tupperware tub before she waved goodbye to Rachel and left the B&B for the village hall with her goodies under her arm.

The Events Committee meeting was exactly as anyone would predict a village hall group to be. There were a set of wine-red padded chairs placed in a circle, and to the right there was a table where several containers of food rested.

Ally made a beeline for it and put her biscuits down just as a familiar face appeared at her side instantly.
