KELLER

He woke to the sound of someone knocking at his door. More like pounding. More like a panicked ruckus? Anyway, Keller woke and stumbled across the dark space of his bedroom, already knowing who waited outside. He opened the door to find a frazzled, big-haired Dylan in nothing but pajama pants and a tight white t-shirt that showed off every nuance of his swimmer’s physique.

“You’re over a hundred years old?!” he shrieked. “I know you’ve got this bad news older guy thing going on, but, but, but…”

Keller feared Dylan would continue like a broken record if he didn’t say something—but what was he supposed to say? He tried, “Calm down.”

“Calm down?”

Wrong thing to say. Dylan now resembled a firecracker about to go off.

“You’re immortal! That’s insane!”

Movement down the hall over Dylan’s shoulder revealed Camilla, hiding behind a table and large, darkened lamp. Keller widened his eyes at her in question; she widened hers in return, providing no answer. Obviously, she’d been the one to break the news to Dylan and had no idea her pronouncement would cause a tantrum.

“Of all the fucking insane things that have happened to me over the last couple days…” He dug his hands into his dark hair. “This might put me over the edge.”

“Oh, come on. You brought a cat back to life, saw your friend almost get murdered, were attacked by vines, and watched your aunt turn into a rat tornado, but this is the thing that’s too much?”

“I know!” Dylan screamed. “Thanks for the fucking recap, Keller!”

“He hears the ghosts in the basement too,” Camilla announced. She stepped out of her hiding place twisting her hands in front of her.

“Wh—” Keller glanced at her, then back to Dylan. “God, why am I not surprised?”

“Is that bad!” Dylan no longer posed things as questions but instead as monotone shouting.

“It’s just another thing to add to the list, really.”

Dylan threw his hands in the air. “I’m basically a verbena.”

Keller squinted. “I’m sorry?”

“Verbena!” Dylan exclaimed, as if yelling the herb’s name explained everything. “A magical all-purpose herb! Helps with headaches and stress but also with protection, inspiration, yadda, yadda, the list goes on!”

“How do you know that?”

“Because!” The kid was going to lose his voice at any moment. “As I previously mentioned! When I’m not training with Mama or wrestling bobcats or hearing! Voices! In! The! Night! I’m reading every book in this creepy ass house to try and figure out who I am!” He slumped to the floor and sat with folded legs at Keller’s feet.

Camilla tiptoed close and sat next to him. Dylan rested his head on her shoulder just as Raven appeared from down the hall at a light jog.

“What is it, Raven?” Keller asked because she wouldn’t be out of bed at 2 AM and fully dressed without a reason.

“Is he done?” She gestured to the wilted pile of Dylan on the floor.

“Rae. What?”

“We’ve got a problem,” she replied, followed by the sound of hurried feet.

Isador appeared carrying a candle, which wasn’t necessary since the Fairview gas lamps always glowed—but it made her look spooky.
