Three transparent colours, Permanent Rose, Prussian Blue and Aureolin in the painting above left, mix to a deeper black for the silhouette of the landscape than the three opaque colours in the painting on the right – Cadmium Red, Cerulean Blue and Cadmium Yellow.

Primary Values

Each primary hue comes with an inherent basic tone. Blue is by nature a deeper tone than red, and red a deeper tone than yellow, but the degree of transparency determines the depth of value each hue can offer or achieve in a mix. Transparent versions mix to deeper, more transparent darks, and opaque pigments lighten, mute or dull a mix.
