The Back of the Movement: The Women’s Suffrage March

Alice Paul, a twenty-eight-year-old radical and revolutionary suffragist, thought the National American Woman Suffrage Association wasn’t doing enough to get the federal government to recognize its proposed suffrage amendment. By 1911, several states, including Colorado, Utah, Idaho, and Washington, had passed laws granting women the right to vote, but the NAWSA was no closer to getting incoming president Woodrow Wilson or Congress to recognize the need for and to do something about a federal women’s suffrage amendment. Paul was tired of waiting, and she wasn’t interested in traveling around the country trying to convince lawmakers to pass individual state suffrage amendments, while the president and the lawmakers in the capital pretended suffragists were just annoying, buzzing flies who would eventually go away. Direct action—bringing attention to the issues through confrontational and sometimes dangerous activism—was more appealing to Paul.
