Blair’s legs pumped hard as Chris dragged her along by the hand, fleeing the swarm. She yelped when one of the tiny black insects landed on the back of her neck and sizzled. Chris’s coat bore numerous holes singed by the fiery little monsters.

“They’re gaining,” she gasped between pants.

“Can’t you do something with magic?”

“No time to focus, they’d be all over us before I could do anything.”

“Hang on,” Chris said.

With surprising strength, the detective swept Blair off her feet and put her on his shoulders. As he ran, his form shifted. Suddenly she bounced along on the back of a loping gray wolf, one ear folded just like Chris’ human form.

She leaned over and hugged her legs to his leanly muscled form, grasping tufts of gray fur with her trembling fingers. They began to pull ahead of the swarm, much to her relief. Chris tore into a busy intersection, cars screeching and honking their horns with angry blasts as they careened between them.

“Oh thank goodness,” Blair said as the rain returned. She glanced over her shoulder and saw the swarm dissipate into drifting, oily black smoke.

Chris continued to run through the rain slick streets, ducking into a narrow alley. They sheltered under an awning as he resumed his normal human form.

“Mighty convenient, we get attacked right after accusing Bruce Gannon of murder,” Chris griped.

“I don’t think he had anything to do with this,” Blair said. “Do you know what those things were?”

“Not really, no. They definitely weren’t mosquitos, though.” He opened his palm and revealed a mostly intact creature. Blair stared at the crumpled form. It sort of resembled a mosquito, but seemed composed of a hard, grainy black material. Like ash or soot.

“Maybe someone at the Underwyrd market will know what they are?” Chris asked.

“I’ll ask Aileen,” Blair said. “I’ve been meaning to catch up with her anyway.”

“I think we should catch a cab, just in case,” Chris said, his wary eyes on the sky.

“Agreed.”

They traveled to the open air market, which continued unabated despite the rain. Blair noted the shielding spell stretched between the buildings forming the alleyway, protecting the market and its denizens from the deluge.

Blair moved past a man struggling to hold the reins of a unicorn with a rainbow hued horn and made a beeline for Aileen’s booth. The older witch grinned at her approach.

“Blair, so nice to see you again—and you’ve brought a friend.”

Aileen’s smile faded when she took in their grim expressions and bedraggled appearance.

“What happened to you two?”

“This happened,” Chris said, opening his palm and showing her the semi squished black insect. “Any idea what it is?”

Aileen’s countenance paled by several shades. “Oh dear.”

She glanced up fearfully to the sky and motioned them into her booth. “Come on, let’s talk inside.”

“Inside?” Blair frowned, staring at the booth with incredulity. It seemed far too small to hold all three of them with any degree of comfort.

Nonetheless, she followed Chris through the curtain—and found herself in a spacious room which appeared like the interior of a safari tent.
