Evidence-based research shows that both pain medication and cortisol levels (the stress hormone) are reduced when people visit gardens. The type of garden varies. Densely planted pathways that encourage intimate contact by brushing up against plants show the highest stress-reduction indices. Deep breathing by walking or meditating in a garden opens your chest and airways, allowing oxygen into your blood. This oxygen helps remove toxins, gradually equalizing blood pressure, lowering cortisol and calming the nerves. A change in elevation, a distant vista, viewing sculpture or relaxing in an enclosed, green refuge can affect a change in your attitude that takes you outside of yourself and promotes both mental and physical health.
