“Get Outta My Way. I Can Do It.”

In many ways, as American citizens we have lost our way. This has been hugely expensive for us as individuals and as a country. But we can recover. Most of us will have to learn or re-learn what self-reliance is, what it feels like and how to live it on a daily basis. This is not a bad thing; in fact, the process can be one of the most empowering and transformative of our lives. It makes little difference if the genesis for this recovery revolution is forced upon us by the current state of the economy or through voluntary choice.

Taking action now has to begin at the ultimate grassroots level—that is, at the level of the individual. Anything else is mere hope, and more than likely it is misplaced hope. And another thing: Over the next couple of decades, the intensity of desperation among those who won’t or can’t move to a place of self-reliance and independence could rise dramatically. I am not suggesting a future state of civil unrest or anarchy. It is not predictable.

But consider this: If the government cannot issue checks or food stamps or other support for those in need, won’t people ultimately do what they must to address their requirements for food, shelter and basic medical care? It may be wise—at the level of the individual—to consider the means for protecting your family and assets from the potential consequences of an extended period of economic malaise, an increasing number of “have-nots” and a government without the resources or the will to fix any of it. In the case of tangible assets, it may mean being purposeful about protecting them, and hedging your bets through use of insurance, security measures and the like.

I am not suggesting we are at the crossroads of a biological fight or flight choice. But we are at a point in history where, for many, flight is not an option. We will fight. That is what we do as humans when we are cornered, and that is our legacy as Americans. If we have trouble finding self-reliance for ourselves, American entrepreneurs will come up with ways to create it, package it, teach it, and form groups to support it. And, we will gladly pay them for it.
