KATAHDIN, Maine

ROBERT Y. KAUFMAN/YOGI, INC./CORBIS

The granite peaks of Mount Katahdin tower majestically over the gorgeous scenery of Baxter State Park, never more beautiful than when autumn transforms the foliage surrounding the Penobscot River (above) and the meadows leading to the mountain into vivid shades of red and gold. Katahdin means “greatest mountain” in the language of the Penobscot Indians, and though its height of 5,268 feet may not be much by global standards, it is the highest peak in Maine and it does provide climbers with a stern challenge. If you wish to hike the mountain or perhaps just explore Baxter’s many charms, try to book your trip early. The number of visitors allowed in the park is strictly limited each day, and the coveted campsites—reservations only—are hard to come by.
