Chapter 39
Lyla
After my conversation with Jackson, I am fuming, and I go back into the gym and try to find where Wrigley disappeared to. Itâs not hard to doâhe hasnât moved from the spot on the dance floor where I left him. Heâs still dancing stupidly, my classmates throwing their heads back with laughter around him.
âHey,â I say a bit curtly when I reach him. He smiles at me and stops dancing.
âWhoa, are you okay?â he asks, apparently noticing that I have some sort of look on my face.
âI⦠yeah, Iâm good,â I tell him. âWant to go get a drink?â
âDefinitely.â He takes my hand in front of everyone, even the girls that had been giggling at his dance moves and leads me off the floor. We go over to the beverages and grab two mini water bottles. I chug mine until itâs empty.
âSo, are you having a good time?â he asks, but thereâs something about the tone of his voice that makes me think he suspects Iâm not.
And itâs true. Iâm not. I feel like coming to the dance was a mistake. I am still heated about my confrontation with Jackson, and it bothers me that Iâm letting it bother me. Who cares if he came here with Sophia? Who cares if itâs unfair that he got mad at me for being with Warner? I am with Wrigley by choice.
âDo you want my honest answer?â I decide to ask. This isnât how the new old Lyla should be acting. But right now, Iâve forgotten that Iâm doing that.
âAlways, you goofball.â Wrigley chuckles.
âI donât know what I was thinking when I asked you to go to the dance with me.â It feels strangely relieving to finally be a little bit honest. To not be trying so hard at being the old me. But then the guilt settles in after my statement. This is what I had promised when I was locked in the shed. And I was breaking that promise by being how I truly want to be.
He shifts uncomfortably and replaces the cap on his water bottle. He has only taken a little sip out of it. âWhat do you mean?â he asks cautiously.
âIâm glad Iâm here with you, donât get me wrong,â I say, but my stomach dips a little for some reason. âItâs just that⦠coming to the dance had been a bad idea. I donât actually want to be here. Do you?â
âLyla, I only came because you asked me to. Do you think I want to be here?â
I giggle. âNo.â
âSo, what are we going to do about it?â
I tap a finger to my chin. âHow about we ditch this stupid thing and go get some ice cream from Delilahâs?â
âYouâve just read my mind.â
