Chapter 16

“His library was a fine dark place bricked with books, so anything could happen there and always did. All you had to do was pull a book from the shelf and open it and suddenly the darkness was not so dark anymore.”

Ray Bradbury

“You’re the map, You’re my compass

You help me navigate the currents underneath

Take the lead, I surrender.”

Colton Dixon

Maggie was sitting on the porch early the next morning. Her coffee mug reflected how she was feeling that morning: ‘Drink coffee, read books, dismantle systems of oppression.’ So, where to start?

The apocalypse lending library had decided to wait two weeks before starting up. They wanted to give people time to figure out what they thought they needed as opposed to what they actually did need to make it through the next year. Posters were made with place and time. The locations had already been scouted. The group had found four good spots in different parts of town. They were going to hang the posters in the next week so people could maybe plan ahead. The posters had already mentioned what would work as a deposit or if they wanted to barter for staples and seeds. They were not going to lend out ammo or guns but would barter some of the ones they didn’t have a lot of ammo for or ones they had taken off the trespassers yesterday.

Howard wandered out with his coffee. “What’s got you so deep in thought? You still worried about last evening?”

“Yes and no. What we did doesn’t bother me. That it happened so quickly after the announcement of the event does. I really hadn’t expected to see anyone approach us for a few days.”

“Well, it was Janet, so that explains why so soon. She’d had something planned for a while, and the solar storm just moved up her plans sooner. She didn’t have enough support. I’m glad we had an attempt that we could put down. It gave us a chance to see how we work together and where we have some holes so far. We still have some time to fix things before the SHTF. I’m sure there are a few more. Have you thought anymore about people we could add to the group?”

“Were there any teachers that might be a good fit? Maybe someone with expertise in cooking, sewing, woodwork, farming, or former service members? We need to get this done sooner rather than later. How about Jordan and Denise? What family do they have? I don’t want to add people that aren’t going to pull their own weight.”

“There’s a young gentleman who teaches VoAg and has served one tour. That’s where he met his wife, who was a medic at the base and now works as a nurse at one of the local doctor's offices. Their names are Curt and Karen Carter. They have a small hobby farm on the other side of town. Let’s make a trip over there later this morning. Maybe take Robbie or Thomas with us.”

“Sounds like a plan.
