CHAPTER 29
Eleanor
There was something about that strange blonde Viking-like girl, the one who could turn into a dragon. Perhaps it was the power emanating from her Amazonian form. In the far reaches of her mind, Eleanor had a thought tugging at her, but she could not quite grasp it. So she soon dismissed it. No matter—she had the perfect couple of books in mind to collect for the girl.
She was compiling a mental reading list as she climbed the stone steps to the hospital and breezed into the reception area. Nurse Leslie was waiting for her, coffee in hand.
“I’m to be your assistant when there aren’t normal sick patients for me to attend,” the nurse explained, rising from her spot at the desk. “The campus will let me know if someone checks in,” she mentioned offhandedly, gesturing at the now empty reception area. Eleanor had to suppress a small shudder. Were there eyes on them at all times…and could one even consider them eyes per say?
“Yes right, well I would like to start by documenting assessments. Then we can draw up a treatment plan for each patient to present to Dr. Lawrence,” Eleanor started, color rising just slightly when she spoke Thomas’s name.
Nurse Leslie’s shrewd eyes caught all of it. “So,” she said casually, falling into step with Eleanor as they ascended the staircase, “you had dinner with Thomas…I mean, Dr. Lawrence, last night?”
Eleanor did not fail to notice the nurse’s slip in address of Thomas. She cleared her throat. “Yes, um…just a getting to know you type affair. Devising our treatment strategies and whatnot.” She didn’t want to make too much of the event, even though in the back of her mind she was still relishing the twinkling merriment in the doctor’s eyes, the way he threw his head back and laughed with his whole chest rattling.
“Yes, of course,” Nurse Leslie replied with a matter-of-factness that strangely irked Eleanor—as if the doctor would not want to dine with her for any other reason.
Eleanor found herself regarding Nurse Leslie out of the corner of her eye. The luscious, perfectly coifed honey curls, the fire engine red lipstick which never seemed to smudge onto blindingly white teeth. And a set of curved, smooth legs to die for. Nurse Leslie was a bombshell. Why had Eleanor not seen it before? Of course, she and Thomas would have a relationship—it was only natural with them working so closely together and her being so classically beautiful and nurturing to the cadets Thomas loved so well to boot. Eleanor wanted to kick herself for her stupid little infatuation and determined on the spot to snuff it like a candle. Besides, what would a man who had spent four hundred years rebelling against Arcanton want with a thoroughly upper crust Arcanton woman? Nothing romantic, surely.
Regardless, Eleanor was determined to stick to Dr. Lawrence’s modus operandi in the running of his hospital.
