Dugout canoes have been made for centuries by many Native American peoples.
Gene Ellis painted a scene showing Lewis and Clark and their corps as they visited with the Cathlapotle (kath-LAH-puh-til) tribe in 1806 along the Columbia River in western North America. The men wrote about this meeting in their detailed journals. Throughout their trip, they wrote almost one million words, drew maps of their routes, and made sketches of the plants, animals, and people they encountered along the way.
Again, they needed the assistance of Native Americans to complete their journey. The Nez Percé taught them how to build dugout canoes. These canoes floated them down a series of rivers, and they reached the Pacific Ocean before winter. They found the water that they had sought, but not the Northwest Passage. Before heading back home, they would have to survive another winter, this time on the Pacific Coast.
