IT’S COMPLICATED

I caught the last train out of London Paddington, heading for Bath. A portal would have been quicker, but I didn’t want to involve Hamilton or the Congregatio just yet. Not for a reinforced steel door.

Because what if Ashley was wrong? An employee of the month photo was the flimsiest of clues. It might not mean anything. But at the same time, I didn’t have anything else to go on. Everyone had said my father had left me a message. The photo was the only message I could find.

The train accelerated out of London, flashing through Ealing Broadway and Slough without stopping, out into the countryside towards Reading. I sat in carriage B, trying not to catch the attention of the late night drunks. Although I doubted they would bother me. Ashley had paid for two tickets. One for me and, in an unexpected turn of events, one for Clive, the frost giant from the Fat Trumpeter. Remember him? Accountant. Huge orange eye. He met us at Paddington Station carrying a silver suitcase.

“Ello,” said Clive. “Good to see you again, Nate.” As my brain struggled to see clearly beyond the Veil, Clive flickered between blue-skinned giant and a youngish, very tall man with a shock of spiked blond hair. But at least he’d got my name right.

Ashley stared at the departure boards, waiting for our boarding information. I gave him a nudge. “Can I have a word?” I smiled back at Clive, trying to stay polite. “In private.”

The shapeshifter frowned and nodded. He looked grumpy. Still dealing with Raza’s duplicity, perhaps. Or ruminating over the fact that Teaks had killed his friend. Robert Strode might have treated me and my family badly, but some people had thought the world of him.

“Please excuse us for just a few minutes,” I said to Clive and pulled Ashley aside. The big shapeshifter looked at me as if nothing was wrong. For someone who could read people’s auras, he clearly hadn’t noticed my darkening mood.

“What’s going on?” I whispered. “Why aren’t you coming with me?”

Ashley put his hand on my shoulder. “Clive is much better suited to protecting you. I’m going to stay here.”

I shrugged his hand away. “But I don’t know Clive. Only met him once. And my memories of that night are somewhat hazy thanks to Raza and his tooth-snuff.” I shuddered at the thought of it.

“Oh, Clive’s lovely. Long-time friend of your dad. Likes old vinyl and talks way too much about rockets. But he does a bit of close protection work on the side. Comes highly recommended. Says that one of the best investments you can make is in your own security. Wise words, don’t you think?”

“Yes, but—”

“I know what you’re thinking. He’s not much of a giant yet. But he can still punch through concrete, so you shouldn’t be bothered by anyone on your trip. Even the vampires will think twice. You can trust him.”

“That’s great and everything, but I’d like you to come. You understand what’s at stake.
