Dear Dean Melby,1 October 22, 1952

Thank you for the reprint of your article on Progressive Education for the British Yearbook. I have read it with interest. My impression is that you exaggerate the amount of hysteria and repression in American education, and ignore the verifiable facts that American teachers have displayed more courage than they have at any other time in their history. When did faculties like those of California, Chicago, Pennsylvania, and Ohio ever actually oppose loyalty oaths in the past? Further, teachers as a group are more progressive than any other professional group. In the light of the gravity of the dangers, external and internal, to the security and survival of the United States, I think the educational situation, bad as it is in some places, is still marked by more freedom than we have ever enjoyed in the past.

I am taking the liberty of enclosing a pamphlet I have written on the general situation in which I try to put things, including the rash of cultural vigilantism, in proper perspective.

1. Ernest O. Melby, dean, school of education, New York University.
