391. As many as five items are recorded in the algebraic system:

(a) the number of the move;

(b) the symbol of the moving unit (excluding pawns, whose movement is understood by implication);

(c) the name of the starting square (which is not used in a shortened version);

(d) whether the unit moves or captures (also not necessary in the shortened form);

(e) the name of the destination square.

392. One should know something about the descriptive system too - not for recording, but to augment the description of certain ideas and actions. It describes the movement of the forces in terms of their names.
