CHAPTER TWELVE
âLovely to see you Miss Nolan. Itâs been a while.â Harem stepped from behind the counter, his movements soft and fluid in a way that only the stick-thin can manage. The scar running down his rough brown cheek should have made him intimidating, but his smile was always so broad and bright it was impossible to feel anything other than warmth radiating from his soul.
And it was lovely to see him, too.
Sue had yet to work out what it was about the Marhaba restaurant that made the staff so happy. Everyone from the cooks to those who spent their time up to their elbows in the washing-up bowl looked like this was the only place they wanted to be. Maybe it was just the fact they had a job, or the constant lift from the background sounds of North African music. It was just as possible that their employer treated them well, though she refused to entertain that option so that she could keep Johnny Yen in her bad books. âMr. Yen is expecting you. May I take your coat?â
She slipped the strap of her bag from her shoulder and unbuttoned her jacket. Harem took it by the collar and slipped it off without any fuss. He stripped all of his customers of their outer layers without so much as a bump or twist. If the restaurant ever closed, he could earn a living as a pick pocket.
Sue followed him through the main restaurant where the bubble of chat between young couples leaning toward each other made her heart sag.
She stuck to Harem as he wandered down a dark corridor past the kitchen where the clanking of pans and plates accompanied the sizzling of fresh meat. The No Entry sign on the gate at the end of the passage was ignored and led them to the stairs.
On the first floor, the light spilled in from the outside and the space was still and quiet. A couple more turns and they arrived at a heavy oak door.
Sitting in the shadowy niche was a large man with a bald head and a neat-fitting suit. He looked up from his paper and nodded hello.
The two men exchanged words in a language that Sue couldnât understand and Harem turned the door handle and went inside.
Sueâs body stopped working for a moment. Her pulse froze. Her breathing halted. The blood in her veins stayed where it was and her eyes fixed upon the floor. When she looked up, she saw the man she had spent years avoiding.
His chair scraped on the floor, his footsteps came closer and the smooth tune of his voice greeted her.
Her eyes left the floor and found focus. She saw Johnnyâs brown feet in a pair of leather flip-flops and moved up along his pressed jeans and his Rolling Stones tee-shirt, the one with the big lips and open mouth. When she finally arrived at his face, she was able to cope.
The wave of attraction that passed through her body and lingered in her belly was the same as it was every time they met.
