If it wasn’t so serious, Woody would laugh.

His mom called and said Jean had offered to drive her to the Singing Christmas Tree so he wouldn’t need to rush back. He thanked her and said he would drive from DC to the church. That way, he wouldn’t have to wonder about where to sit. If he’d gone home first, he’d be expected to drive and take Mrs. Walker and Nancy. Then it would feel ridiculous not to sit with them.

He’d told Nancy that where to sit had never been an issue with him. Now it was. He knew the church women would gather around his mom, and he didn’t want to be in the midst of that. Nancy would likely sit beside her mom. He’d feel like a sore thumb sitting beside his mom in the midst of her church women friends.

Then he remembered Nancy said she had sung with a group at the hospital. Maybe she would be in the tree. This was a bad idea. He should have stayed in Georgetown.

However, he pulled into the parking lot that was about one-third filled. Just as he started to get out he saw red backup lights reflected in his car, and he looked in the rearview mirror. In a parking space in back of him, a couple spots down, Nancy was getting out of her car. Her remote sounded, she turned then stopped and stared as he slammed his car door.

Okay, four people who had been friends for years and lived with one house between them drove to the nearby church in three cars. Ah, the incredulity of it.

But maybe there was a good reason. Neither he nor Nancy could pretend not to see each other. She was looking around. For an escape route? Ridiculous. They’d met. They’d talked. They had grown up. They were friends.

“Cold,” he said, walking closer to her. Yes, God had been generous to make weather a topic one could always discuss. It’s either too hot or too cold to mention those rare times when it’s just right.

She nodded.

“Are you singing in the tree?” he asked.

“No. They asked, but they’ve been practicing for weeks. I haven’t been here that long and didn’t want to chance being a crow in the midst of canaries.”

He laughed. “Never. I’ve heard you sing.”

They walked on to the front door. The pastor in the foyer spoke to them and shook Woody’s hand.

“Dr. Lawing,” he heard and turned to see Thomas Knight. They moved aside, and after a few words Thomas invited Woody to his home after the service.

Woody responded, “I may need to be home with Mom.”

Thomas nodded. “The church has been praying for her.”

They talked a little longer. Woody walked to one of the two doorways leading to the sanctuary. A few rows down he saw Nancy. She had removed her coat and draped it over the back of the pew. Was she saving a place for him? Would she want to accompany him to the Knights?

“Woody,” his mom’s voice said.
