Upon returning to the precinct, Fiona couldn't shake the conversation she'd had with Jake earlier. Her mind raced with thoughts of Joslyn, the case, and now the reminder that Jake's ex could be carrying his child. She knew she would stand by him no matter the outcome, but the prospect of facing such a reality was daunting.

As they walked through the bustling precinct, Fiona sensed Jake's concern for her, even though he remained silent. Turning towards him, she said, "I'm alright, Jake. I promise."

"Okay," he replied, his brown eyes searching hers, seeking confirmation of her well-being.

Inside Fiona's head, her thoughts continued to swirl. The weight of the case and everything else going on made it difficult to focus. She knew they needed to make progress, but her emotions threatened to overwhelm her. As they approached their desks, Fiona tried to push these thoughts aside, drawing upon the strength she found in their partnership.

"Let's get back to work," she suggested, her voice steady. "We have a lot to do."

"Right," Jake agreed, nodding firmly. "Together, we'll find the answers we need."

Their resolve solidified, they dove back into the investigation, determined to bring closure to the victims and their families.

Fiona stared at the peeling paint on the walls of the Little Stone precinct, the muted hue a testament to years of wear. The scent of stale coffee filled the air, and she refocused her attention as Jake stepped forward, determination etched on his face.

"Let's go talk to Sheriff Jones," he suggested, motioning toward the sheriff's office.

"Agreed," Fiona said, pushing aside her lingering thoughts of their earlier conversation. She needed to focus on the case, and now wasn't the time to let personal matters cloud her judgment.

As they approached the sheriff's office, Fiona could see Jones through the glass door, hunched over his desk, brow furrowed in concentration. He looked up when they entered, giving them a nod of acknowledgment.

"Sheriff, did you issue that warning to the public?" Jake asked without preamble.

"Sure did," Sheriff Jones replied gruffly. "It's broadcasting on local news, social media, and every radio station. The women of Little Stone will know to be cautious."

"Good," Jake said, relief flickering across his face for a moment before being replaced by steely resolve. "Now, do you have any leads? Locals with vendettas against women, known abusers—anything?"

Sheriff Jones leaned back in his chair, fingers drumming on the desktop. "I've been working this job for ten years, and if I had any leads, I would've checked them out myself. But," he continued, gesturing to a nearby file cabinet, "feel free to search through my files. All the cases you’ll want to know about will be in there. Every piece of crap in Little Stone who’s ever laid a hand on a woman, that we know about… will be in those records.”

"Thank you," Fiona said quietly, feeling the weight of their task. They were going to have to sift through a lot of evil, but if that was what it took to find the killer, then Fiona wouldn’t stop until she followed every last lead.
