CHAPTER FOURTEEN

Don’t Hang Around with People Who Say Negative Things About Their Own Bodies

Now that you aren’t hanging out with people who say negative things about your body, you might start noticing that you know a lot of people who still say negative things about their own bodies. Sadly, this is just as uncool.

Other people will most likely have a problem if you bring up their own self-deprecating comments in discussion. After all, they’ll argue, they aren’t talking about your body! What does it matter what they say about their own bodies? Your body is fine.

Shame it never really seems to feel like that.

Marianne weighs more than a lot of her friends do (individually and, in some cases combined, ha!) and when those thinner friends complain about how fat they are, or how disgusting their bodies are, even though they don’t intend it, there is an implied commentary being offered up on her own fatter body. After all, if someone who weighs a hundred pounds less thinks his or her body is wretched and appalling, how is it possible that Marianne’s body is any better?
