âWhat do you mean was?â Mr. Poe asked sternly. âWere you fired?â
âNo. Dr. Montgomeryâoh, excuse meââ Stephano turned away and pretended to dab at his eyes as if he were too sad to continue. Facing away from Mr. Poe, he gave the orphans a big wink before continuing. âIâm sorry to tell you thereâs been a horrible accident, Mr. Doe. Dr. Montgomery is dead.â
âPoe,â Mr. Poe said. âHeâs dead? Thatâs terrible. What has happened?â
âI donât know,â Stephano said. âIt looks like snakebite to me, but I donât know anything about snakes. Thatâs why I was going into town, to get a doctor. The children seemed too upset to be left alone.â
âHeâs not taking us to get a doctor!â Klaus shouted. âHeâs taking us to Peru!â
âYou see what I mean?â Stephano said to Mr. Poe, patting Klausâs head. âThe children are obviously very distressed. Dr. Montgomery was going to take them to Peru today.â
âYes, I know,â Mr. Poe said. âThatâs why I hurried over here this morning, to finally bring them their luggage. Klaus, I know youâre confused and upset over this accident, but please try to understand that if Dr. Montgomery is really dead, the expedition is canceled.â
âBut Mr. Poeââ Klaus said indignantly.
âPlease,â Mr. Poe said. âThis is a matter for adults to discuss, Klaus. Clearly, a doctor needs to be called.â
âWell, why donât you drive on up to the house,â Stephano said, âand Iâll take the children and find a doctor.â
âJosé!â Sunny shrieked, which probably meant something like âNo way!â
âWhy donât we all go to the house,â Mr. Poe said, âand call for a doctor?â
Stephano blinked, and for a second his face grew angry again before he was able to calm himself and answer smoothly. âOf course,â he said. âI should have called earlier. Obviously Iâm not thinking as clearly as you. Here, children, get back in the jeep, and Mr. Poe will follow us.â
âWeâre not getting back in that car with you,â Klaus said firmly.
âPlease, Klaus,â Mr. Poe said. âTry to understand. Thereâs been a serious accident. All other discussions will have to be put aside. The only trouble is, Iâm not sure my car will start. Itâs very smashed up.â
âTry the ignition,â Stephano said. Mr. Poe nodded, and walked back to his car. He sat in the driverâs seat and turned the key. The engine made a rough, wet noiseâit sounded quite a bit like Mr. Poeâs coughsâbut it did not start.
âIâm afraid the engine is quite dead,â Mr. Poe called out.
âAnd before long,â Stephano muttered to the children, âyou will be too.â
âIâm sorry,â Mr. Poe said. âI couldnât hear you.â
Stephano smiled. âI said, thatâs too bad. Well, why donât I take the orphans back to the house, and you walk behind us? There isnât room for everyone.â
Mr. Poe frowned. âBut the childrenâs suitcases are here. I donât want to leave them unattended. Why donât we put the luggage into your car, and the children and I will walk back to the house?â
Stephano frowned. âWell, one of the children should ride with me, so I wonât get lost.
