Chapter Eleven

I was pouring Forrest Black, a retired police officer, a cup of coffee when I looked up and my mother and Stormy walked through the door.

“How are you doing, Rainey?” Mom asked, sitting at the front counter and looking over at Forrest’s plate in front of him. “Forrest, does your wife knows about those pancakes you’re putting away?”

Forrest looked at her, turning on his stool. “What my wife doesn’t know won’t hurt her. And I’d appreciate it if you didn’t say anything. After all, you wouldn’t want to hurt her, would you?”

Mom chuckled. “No, I wouldn’t want to hurt Evelyn. How are you doing, Forrest?”

He nodded. “I’m doing okay. I only slip away and get these tasty morsels of mapley goodness once in a while. Don’t tell on me.”

“I won’t tell,” she promised. She looked at me. “What’s a girl got a do to get a cup of coffee around this joint?”

I shook my head. “All right, Mom, I’ll get you a cup of coffee. Stormy? Coffee?”

“I would love some,” Stormy said and sat next to our mother. “It’s a lovely day out there.”

“I know, I wish I was off.” I got two cups and set them down in front of them, filling them with coffee from the carafe. “Now then, what can I get you ladies to eat?”

“I would love an egg white omelet,” Stormy said. She looked at me, eyebrows raised. “It’s going to be bathing suit season soon.”

“That’s what I told Cade last night,” I said, pointing a finger at her. “He laughed at me.”

She nodded soberly. “He doesn’t understand how real the struggle is.”

“Exactly.” I looked at Mom. “And what would you like, Mom?”

“How about a short stack? I just won’t let anybody see me in a bathing suit this season.”

I rolled my eyes at her and jotted down the orders on my order pad. “I’ll be right back.” I headed back to Sam and hung up the orders.

“Is that your mom and sister out there?” he asked without looking at me. He was flipping pancakes on the griddle.

I nodded. “Sure is. I think everybody out there has their food and they’re sitting happy. I believe I’ll get a slice of coffeecake for myself and take a quick break.”

He nodded. “Sounds good.”

I had made a lemon blueberry coffee cake and brought it down to the diner. I cut small pieces for my mom and Stormy and one for myself. Bathing suit season may have been coming up soon, but I needed opinions on this recipe.

I headed back out front with the coffeecake. “Okay, Sam’s making your breakfasts, and here’s a small slice of coffee cake. Stormy, don’t complain, I need your opinion.”

I set the plates down in front of them, and then I looked over at Forrest. “Oh, what am I thinking?” I set the plate with my piece of coffee cake down in front of him. “On the house.”

He grinned. “Say, I should stop down here more often if you’re handing out tasty treats like this.
