Chapter Eleven
I was pouring Forrest Black, a retired police officer, a cup of coffee when I looked up and my mother and Stormy walked through the door.
âHow are you doing, Rainey?â Mom asked, sitting at the front counter and looking over at Forrestâs plate in front of him. âForrest, does your wife knows about those pancakes youâre putting away?â
Forrest looked at her, turning on his stool. âWhat my wife doesnât know wonât hurt her. And Iâd appreciate it if you didnât say anything. After all, you wouldnât want to hurt her, would you?â
Mom chuckled. âNo, I wouldnât want to hurt Evelyn. How are you doing, Forrest?â
He nodded. âIâm doing okay. I only slip away and get these tasty morsels of mapley goodness once in a while. Donât tell on me.â
âI wonât tell,â she promised. She looked at me. âWhatâs a girl got a do to get a cup of coffee around this joint?â
I shook my head. âAll right, Mom, Iâll get you a cup of coffee. Stormy? Coffee?â
âI would love some,â Stormy said and sat next to our mother. âItâs a lovely day out there.â
âI know, I wish I was off.â I got two cups and set them down in front of them, filling them with coffee from the carafe. âNow then, what can I get you ladies to eat?â
âI would love an egg white omelet,â Stormy said. She looked at me, eyebrows raised. âItâs going to be bathing suit season soon.â
âThatâs what I told Cade last night,â I said, pointing a finger at her. âHe laughed at me.â
She nodded soberly. âHe doesnât understand how real the struggle is.â
âExactly.â I looked at Mom. âAnd what would you like, Mom?â
âHow about a short stack? I just wonât let anybody see me in a bathing suit this season.â
I rolled my eyes at her and jotted down the orders on my order pad. âIâll be right back.â I headed back to Sam and hung up the orders.
âIs that your mom and sister out there?â he asked without looking at me. He was flipping pancakes on the griddle.
I nodded. âSure is. I think everybody out there has their food and theyâre sitting happy. I believe Iâll get a slice of coffeecake for myself and take a quick break.â
He nodded. âSounds good.â
I had made a lemon blueberry coffee cake and brought it down to the diner. I cut small pieces for my mom and Stormy and one for myself. Bathing suit season may have been coming up soon, but I needed opinions on this recipe.
I headed back out front with the coffeecake. âOkay, Samâs making your breakfasts, and hereâs a small slice of coffee cake. Stormy, donât complain, I need your opinion.â
I set the plates down in front of them, and then I looked over at Forrest. âOh, what am I thinking?â I set the plate with my piece of coffee cake down in front of him. âOn the house.â
He grinned. âSay, I should stop down here more often if youâre handing out tasty treats like this.
