Chapter 33

Sift immediately dropped the crystal he’d been watching and strode to the box boundary.

It’s a Ruler of the Ring match, Sift responded.

Is that good or bad, Lylan asked.

Sift explained. The team in the central ring receives a point for every second they’re alone there. If they receive more than half the points, the only hope the other team has is a knockout.

That seems straightforward, Ruwen said.

Once a team has more than half the points, it gets dangerous as the other team becomes desperate. There’s a fine line between knocking out an opponent and killing them. This is a fan favorite because it’s one of the most fatal contests.

Ruwen considered this new information and wondered if his idea would make this too risky. He focused on just Sift and spoke in Chat. If it gets too dangerous, we’ll forfeit.

Sift nodded and Ruwen read Sift’s body language like a book. Sift didn’t think they had a chance.

Do you think we should practice our technique? Sift asked Ruwen.

Ky will want to know why we’re fighting so stupid.

Won’t she anyway when the match is over?

I hadn’t thought of that. Let me think. Ten seconds later, Ruwen continued. You told me this team was good but not great. So our story is, we wanted to disguise our style to give us an advantage in the coming fights, and this team seemed like a good risk to try something crazy. That is almost all true. We’re only hiding our true motivation.

Okay, Sift said. I just wish we could practice it a little first.

We’ll practice on our walk to the match.

Sift nodded. We have time, so let’s go through the crystals and I’ll tell you what I know about each team. Let me get Io.

Sift retrieved Io from Ky and leaned the dagger against the wall.

They started with their own match. The crystals included sound, but their match didn’t warrant an announcer, so Sift kept it off. Watching the fight, it immediately became clear everyone would know how much Ruwen had faked his injuries. The output from the belt they’d worn displayed his damage, and he had never sustained any.

That’s a little embarrassing, Ruwen told Sift in Chat.

Yeah, it’s too bad the crystal creators showed the output from those belts. Your acting wasn’t bad, but now our competitors know two things. You didn’t take a single point of damage from Mai’s Soul attacks, which tells everyone you’ve reached at least Jade in your Fortification. And second, you aren’t noble and honest like the Burning Scorpions.

Sift nodded at the dagger. Io says everyone now thinks you’re a trickster, dishonest, and probably a terrible person.

Hey!

Unlike you, the crystal doesn’t lie, Sift said.

I’m a good person.

That’s what villains always say.

If I’m the villain, who’s the hero?

Me, of course.

You?

Sift nodded. Io agrees. Sift stood tall, placed the crystal down, and touched his chest. The sage teacher who desperately tries to guide his wayward disciple who continually mitigates on everyone.

You’re insane. And that’s not what mitigate means.

Sift laughed and picked up the next crystal to study.
