The whole world around Bryan seemed to change in an instant. The sky, which had been blanketed by thick, gray clouds, turned blue and bright and the sun shone down on Bryan’s skin, warming him to his bones. The trees, which had seemed frightening and looming, now looked calm and green, and Bryan no longer had to fight the inkling of fear that tried to take him over.

The corpse of the Mountain King had faded quicker than Bryan had thought possible. In his place was a rather large treasure chest. The chests that Bryan had looted before were small enough to fit in his hand, but this one was massive, at least the size of a small bookshelf.

When the boy reached forward and pressed his hand against the lid, it vanished, and in its place was a pile of goodies.

“Oh!” Bryan went through his loot, and the first thing that he found was a new sword.

This new sword was glorious. It was made of solid steel, shining silver in the bright sunlight. The hilt was made of a metal that looked like bronze and it was wrapped tight in dark leather cording. Bryan held it up and he swung the sword through the air, and he could not help but grin as he felt how easy it was to use. The boy looked down at his wooden sword, still stained with the blood of the fallen animals of the forest, and he smiled.

“Thanks for all of your help,” Bryan said as he slid it deep into the miscellaneous part of his bag, “Maybe I’ll get a few gold pieces for it when I reach the village.”

The teen went back to work, digging through the loot. It was mostly food, things like apples, nuts, hand pies, and cured meat jerky, all of which made his mouth water. He gnawed on a piece of jerky as he pocketed the rest of the foodstuffs.

And that was when he saw the leathers.

New armor was part of his goodies, and Bryan could not stop the smile as he held it up. These leather bits were more ordinate than the vestments that he was currently wearing. The leather was a little heavier, but when Nathan applied it to himself, he felt lighter and more agile than ever. He looked down and his fingers passed over the carvings in the leather that looked like leaves and tree branches, and he could not help but smile. The work was intricate, beautiful, and perfectly reminiscent of the trees that grew in level one.

“This is nice,” Bryan said as he straightened up. He moved in all ways that he could think of, stretching and striking with his new sword, and he could not stop marveling at how easily he could move in his new wares. It was as though he was wearing nothing but his own skin.

Sheathing his sword, the boy’s eyes wandered all over the clearing, and he took it all in one last time. The forest had been good to him, training him up for the battle ahead.
