Dr. Elmo Stevenson

When Dr. Elmo Stevenson was appointed president of Southern Oregon College in 1946, the school was experiencing an alarming lull in enrollment brought on by the beginning of World War II and was threatened with closure. Less than 100 students were registered for classes in the fall of 1945. By the end of 1946, as veterans began to return home and take advantage of benefits associated with the Servicemen’s Readjustment Act, or GI Bill, Stevenson helped foster an enrollment increase to about 500 students. Much of Stevenson’s legacy at the school can be traced though a concise history written by former university professor Arthur Kreisman, who remembers Stevenson as a charismatic and sometimes authoritarian leader who insisted his male professors wear ties. In Stevenson’s 23 years as president—nearly twice as long as any other president has served—he helped establish longstanding links between the school and the community through his involvement in the establishment of Jefferson Public Radio and the Rogue Valley Symphony Orchestra. Stevenson also oversaw the construction of several new buildings on campus, including the Suzanne Holmes and Cascade dorms and McNeal athletic complex.
