Chapter 24

Dynan sat down at the end of the Talryn’s dock with Marc and Col Eldin’s little girl, Treila. She decided that Dynan was her permanent protector, still shaken from being in two raging battles. She was too young to have experienced these things, events that would alter her life for years to come. She reminded him very much of Shalis at the same age, when she would come and plop herself down in the middle of anything he and Dain were doing. At the moment, Treila was perfectly happy sitting in Dynan’s lap, learning how to fish, except she was mostly sleeping.

It was just getting dark and they were all of them nicely satiated after a delicious meal. The dangers and worries of the day were remote, fading from immediacy. Marc felt better after Geneal tended to him. He was still pale and overly tired. The stiffness caused by Sadek’s torture chamber was gone. A big improvement, he said, over how long it usually took to recover.

“It didn’t seem that he meant for you to recover at all this time,” Dynan said silently. “If one more of those charges had touched you, I don’t think you would have.”

“I figured that out about the time the first probe touched me,” Marc said, somewhat sarcastically. “They were set a lot higher than usual.”

“What were those things?”

“One of the lost technologies from the Age of Legends.”

“Old technology,” Dynan said, “I’ve never seen or heard of such a device, twisted as it was to suit Sadek’s purposes. I wonder where he’s gone?”

Marc shrugged. “I don’t know, but I think you’re right about him not giving up his plans.”

“It would be nice to know what those are for certain. Mostly, I was just guessing.”

“Maybe we’ll know more tomorrow, after his sentry and servants have been questioned. You impressed Col Eldin today, even more than he already was.”

“Your father didn’t seem too impressed.”

“He’s a little shocked, is all. And he’s mad at me for not telling him about you. He’s not too happy about you marrying Loren either. He doesn’t like the idea of you taking her away from here. He doesn’t think she really understands what that means.”

Dynan nodded, not feeling very good about it himself, about any of it. “When Col asked me about going to Carthage, I wanted to say yes,” he said. “I wish I could stay here. I like it here. There’s a lot I could do. Help that your people could use. It’s time Cadal took the step toward modernization.”

“Except no one here knows what that means, Dynan.”

“They could come to know it. With someone here to guide the process, it’d be easier than stumbling through the answers.”

Marc smiled. “And you’d be High Chancellor before you know it,” he said. “A King, by any other name. Every time I woke up you were telling someone what they needed to do. If you hadn’t, we wouldn’t have won.”

“Anyone can learn battle tactics.”

“Not just anyone can lead men. You have that.”

“I
