Chapter Fifteen

Freddie

Salt air brushed across her face, bringing her some small measure of comfort. Her heart soared at the feeling of waves guiding the ship beneath her feet. While it wasn’t the Dragon, it was better than being trapped back in the palace.

“Excited to see Captain Peregrine again?” Chauncey asked, standing to her side as they gazed out at the water.

“More than you can imagine.” Freddie replied, letting her smile widen at the thought of their reunion.

“I can’t imagine what it must be like having that sort of connection with someone special.” Chauncey pondered, resting forward on the side of the ship.

“It’s amazing. The way our relationship works is perfect for me, for both of us.” Freddie replied.

“What do you mean? The way your relationship works?” Chauncey asked. His question prompted Freddie’s realisation that he didn’t know how open the pirate community was with love and sex.

“Uh, huh, okay? How to put this?” Freddie stumbled over her words as she tried to figure it out.

“What do you mean?” Chauncey prodded again.

“Grace’s community, I suppose it’s mine now too, is a bit more free than what you’re used to.” Freddie began.

“Free how?” he asked, confusion mingling with curiosity.

“Free in the sense that you’re not tied down to just one person.” Freddie replied awkwardly, hoping that Chauncey wouldn’t react the way she was sure her mother would if she found out.

“Not tied down to one person?” Chauncey clarified. Freddie could almost see the cogs moving in his mind.

“Some people remain committed to one person. But most don’t. They travel too much for it to make any sense for them.” Freddie tried to explain.

“So, you and Grace?”

“Grace has fully embraced the freeing type of relationship. I am interested, but haven’t explored my options yet.”

Chauncey stepped back and looked across the water into the distance. Freddie couldn’t figure out what was going on in his head. Was it good, bad? Was he freaking out? She remembered how surprised she was when she first found out about the lifestyle of pirates. It is so different from everything she was told at the palace. So different from the few books she was allowed to read. Sure, Chauncey was allowed more free rein than she was, but was that enough to allow him to explore alternative forms of relationships?

“Are you safe?” Chauncey asked after a moment of torturous silence.

“As safe as a pirate can be.” Freddie laughed a little, but she knew what he was really asking. “Grace would never hurt me. I’m safe.”

“Are you happy? Even with her seeing other people?” Chauncey asked, being careful to keep his emotions guarded for the moment.

“More so than I have for a long time.” Freddie answered honestly, feeling the warmth filling her up from within.

“Then, I suppose it’s none of my business who you date, or rather, how many people you date.” Chauncey replied carefully. She could tell he was still unsure about the whole subject, but he was giving her the benefit of the doubt.

“Thank you.” Freddie said. She was pleasantly surprised by how well that went.
