Chapter Fifteen
Freddie
Salt air brushed across her face, bringing her some small measure of comfort. Her heart soared at the feeling of waves guiding the ship beneath her feet. While it wasnât the Dragon, it was better than being trapped back in the palace.
âExcited to see Captain Peregrine again?â Chauncey asked, standing to her side as they gazed out at the water.
âMore than you can imagine.â Freddie replied, letting her smile widen at the thought of their reunion.
âI canât imagine what it must be like having that sort of connection with someone special.â Chauncey pondered, resting forward on the side of the ship.
âItâs amazing. The way our relationship works is perfect for me, for both of us.â Freddie replied.
âWhat do you mean? The way your relationship works?â Chauncey asked. His question prompted Freddieâs realisation that he didnât know how open the pirate community was with love and sex.
âUh, huh, okay? How to put this?â Freddie stumbled over her words as she tried to figure it out.
âWhat do you mean?â Chauncey prodded again.
âGraceâs community, I suppose itâs mine now too, is a bit more free than what youâre used to.â Freddie began.
âFree how?â he asked, confusion mingling with curiosity.
âFree in the sense that youâre not tied down to just one person.â Freddie replied awkwardly, hoping that Chauncey wouldnât react the way she was sure her mother would if she found out.
âNot tied down to one person?â Chauncey clarified. Freddie could almost see the cogs moving in his mind.
âSome people remain committed to one person. But most donât. They travel too much for it to make any sense for them.â Freddie tried to explain.
âSo, you and Grace?â
âGrace has fully embraced the freeing type of relationship. I am interested, but havenât explored my options yet.â
Chauncey stepped back and looked across the water into the distance. Freddie couldnât figure out what was going on in his head. Was it good, bad? Was he freaking out? She remembered how surprised she was when she first found out about the lifestyle of pirates. It is so different from everything she was told at the palace. So different from the few books she was allowed to read. Sure, Chauncey was allowed more free rein than she was, but was that enough to allow him to explore alternative forms of relationships?
âAre you safe?â Chauncey asked after a moment of torturous silence.
âAs safe as a pirate can be.â Freddie laughed a little, but she knew what he was really asking. âGrace would never hurt me. Iâm safe.â
âAre you happy? Even with her seeing other people?â Chauncey asked, being careful to keep his emotions guarded for the moment.
âMore so than I have for a long time.â Freddie answered honestly, feeling the warmth filling her up from within.
âThen, I suppose itâs none of my business who you date, or rather, how many people you date.â Chauncey replied carefully. She could tell he was still unsure about the whole subject, but he was giving her the benefit of the doubt.
âThank you.â Freddie said. She was pleasantly surprised by how well that went.
