CHAPTER ELEVEN

Sasha headed toward the street, turned the corner and stopped. Mabel, Theo’s secretary stood next to a car talking to someone. Hope rose and then crashed. It was too dangerous. What if the men looking for her watched Mabel? But this might be her only opportunity.

Mabel doesn’t like you, she tossed you out of Theo’s office, remember? This is different, Theo will help me, he had too. No, he won’t talk to you.

No one can help.

Mabel glanced at her as she waved goodbye to the woman she’d been speaking with.

“Mabel,” Sasha whispered.

Mabel stopped and looked at her. “Do I know you?”

“Yes. Can I speak to you for a minute?” She moved closer to the car.

Mabel frowned. “That’s close enough.”

“It’s Sasha, I need your help,” she whispered.

Mabel frowned as she leaned forward. “What?”

Sasha looked around and repeated herself.

Mabel stared at her for a few seconds. “What happened to you?”

“Can we talk? I need a ride to the other side of town.”

Mabel looked at her and nodded. “Get in. I’ve got to hear this.” Once they were inside the car, Mabel pulled out. “Where are you going?”

“There’s a place I can sleep tonight near North Park.” Sasha looked out the rear-view window, didn’t see any cars and hoped she could find a safe place to rest, she was so tired of running.

“What’s going on? Why’re you dressed like that? In rags?”

“It’s a long story.”

“I’m listening,” Mabel said.

“I was going to stay with my dad and was attacked. My best friend set me up, and some guys are looking for me. I’ve been hiding from them.”

“That was a short version of a long story.”

Sasha shrugged. She would never tell Mabel what she did to Theo, the woman would kill her.

“What were you doing near the library?”

Sasha frowned. “Library?”

“Yeah. I was leaving the library.” Mabel looked at her.

“I was leaving the church, they feed people every day around this time.”

“Oh. Things have really gone bad for you,” Mabel said. “Where are you staying?”

“Nowhere and everywhere.”

“Why’re you staying here? Why not leave town?”

“And go where? To my dad’s? He’s old and they’ve already been to his house asking for me. Should I place him in danger?”

“What on earth did you do?” Mabel asked.

“I trusted the wrong person, did the wrong thing.” She leaned back against the seat rest and closed her eyes for a few seconds.

Mabel pushed her shoulder, waking her.

Sasha wiped her mouth as she looked around. “Where are we?”

“My house. I’m in the process of moving. Get some sleep, eat a hot meal, take a bath. Tonight, rest. Things will be clearer tomorrow.”

Sasha looked at Mabel. “You never liked me, why are you being nice to me?”

“You never liked yourself. And Theo deserved better than you. It wasn’t personal.” She pulled into her garage and closed it.

“Sounds personal,” Sasha said getting out and following her inside.

“One thing,” Mabel said looking at her. “You blend in too well, how did you know to take to the streets?”

“I’ve done it before when I was much younger.
