Cassie drove the car toward to the gate nearest the church. Grace sat in the front with the keys resting in her lap.

“Not this gate,” Grace said. “It’s a service access that leads to some of the outbuildings but not the hall itself. It’s quite a trek around the lake if you go this way.”

“The other gate it is,” Cassie said. She turned the car around and headed back the way they had come and into the side street.

When she drove up to the gate, Malek jumped out of the car with Grace’s keys and unlocked the padlocks.

The driveway was in poor condition, so Cassie drove slowly and mindfully around the many potholes and disturbances to the drive surface. Dead leaves and weeds crunched beneath the wheels of the car and added to the sense of death and abandonment.

The sense of darkness she had noted when she looked through the gates earlier intensified as they drove onto the estate proper. No matter how she focused, though, she couldn’t determine where the darkness lay. It was there, though.

The lake opened out to the side and bent around the thick edge of the woods that hid the rest of the lake from view. The broken remains of a boathouse marred the smooth lines of the shore, but she paid no more attention to it. Directly ahead, a huge three-story house rose out of undergrowth left to grow wild and dense. Although crumbling and run down, the hall was in better condition than she had expected. “Has the hall been empty long, Reverend?”

“Only about twenty years, I think. Although by the looks of it, you would think longer. Properties like this are impossible to maintain. Facilities are basic. There are no mains or grid utilities of any kind here. Although I understand there are large gas and oil storage tanks in an outbuilding, so they must run generators for electricity and heating. Water is from a well. It’s basic by modern standards, but perfectly serviceable if you know what you’re doing. Nonetheless, only hardy souls would choose to stay.”

“Would you stay here?” Cassie asked.

“My needs are few,” Grace said. “I rather like the idea of the solitude.”

“Me, too,” Cassie said.

“Too quiet for me,” Malek said.

“Figures,” Cassie said. “You’d rather be an urban hunter.”

The driveway opened out into a huge graveled area that housed a fair selection of weeds. Cassie pulled to a stop and sat looking at the house.

“As you can see, the house has been changed over the years. The frontage was redesigned in about 1880, which was about the time it changed to Ingleton Hall,” Grace said.

“So it isn’t Weften Hall, then?” Malek asked. “I assumed it was.”

“Me, too,” Cassie admitted. Then again, they’d rushed here with little information. She hoped Morana had more for them when they returned. The reverend seemed to know a fair deal, though, so it wasn’t all bad.

The vicar laughed. “Oh lord, no. It started as a small manor house, Weften Manor. Would you believe it stood alone, and it is how the village came to be called Weften.
