CHAPTER SEVENTEEN

“Renee, you’re finished!” Foucault’s voice screamed.

Adele grimaced, trying not to listen too closely to the shouts blaring from John’s speaker. Her partner was sitting in the backseat, having deferred driving duties to the bodyguard Adele had been assigned. John had a glum look on his face.

Adele stared straight ahead, through the windshield, twisting uncomfortably at the chest strap of her seatbelt.

Every so often, she glanced in the rearview mirror, shifting in the front passenger seat, and glanced toward where her partner listened to the haranguing from the executive.

“I don’t care,” the voice was yelling. “Renee, that’s it. That’s it! You directly defied an order, you dodged the two men I sent to watch over you, and then this? Torturing a prisoner in a police station? You must be out of your damn mind.”

John nodded slowly, but then caught himself and went rigid. He kept his lips sealed, listening. His eyes stared at the back of Adele’s head rest. He had a vacant look in his gaze, his shoulder somewhat rigid and his chest puffed. In another life, she could imagine him in military fatigues, listening to a drill sergeant scream at him.

The executive finally ended his tirade with a long sigh. “Let me make myself clear,” he said, firmly. “You’re coming back to the office. You’re coming back now. If I don’t see you personally in the next thirty minutes, I’m going to send cops. This time not to protect you, but to arrest you. I’ll throw you in a jail cell and toss the key if I have to. Do you think I’m joking, Renee? Do I sound like I’m having fun?”

John sat still and stoic. When a gap of silence was offered, though, he simply said, “No, sir.”

“You’re saying no?”

John hesitated. “Yes, sir. I mean, I don’t think you’re joking, sir”

Another long, weary sigh. “Renee, I’m telling you, it will be a miracle if you don’t end up in a cell over this. I know what happened this morning. And you should’ve told me that as well, by the way.”

Adele winced.

“Where is Agent Sharp? How much was she involved in this?”

John didn’t even blink. “She didn’t know anything about any of it, sir. I specifically misled her. It’s my fault.”

“How noble of you,” the executive snapped, his voice scathing. “You’re coming to the office.”

“Request, sir?”

“No bloody requests, John.”

“I haven’t seen my daughter,” John said, his voice clipped. “I request permission to visit her. She’s staying with a high level DGSI agent, isn’t she? Thank you for arranging that.”

Another pause. Then a reluctant exhalation. The executive said, “You’re welcome. Fine. Stop by, then come see me. We’ll see what we can do to keep you out of prison. But I’m telling you one thing, Renee, you’re done here.”

Adele stared in the mirror now, unable to look away.

“Done, sir?”

A bitter, barking laugh. “If you think, after this stunt, you’ll ever be allowed to work with the DGSI again, you have to be insane. How many times have I warned you? How many times have I begged you not to cross the line? Well, Renee, you’ve crossed it.
