CHAPTER EIGHTEEN

Adele tapped her foot nervously as she watched the police moving outside the Dortmund-based precinct. Four cars, eight officers and an unmarked sedan for John. BKA would be running a drone to keep an eye on things.

When they'd called for backup, Adele hadn't expected this much. Clearly, trafficking was somewhere on a bureaucrat's to-do list.

It wasn't the cops, the radio chatter, or the repeated instructions to the new arrivals from Agent Renee that bothered her. It was the man in an old, blue uniform, with a drooping, walrus mustache and a bit of a bow-legged walk marching towards her.

She felt uneasy-happy, like always when her dad showed up.

John's voice carried on the afternoon air as he addressed the cops in English, “Agent Sharp will be going in first. If anyone catches a whiff of you, the whole thing will bust. We don't want scattered traffickers.”

Adele listened vaguely to the plan she and John had already gone over three times on their drive to the precinct. Renee hated the idea of using Adele as bait, but they'd done it before, and it had turned out good enough.

Now, though, John's voice faded into the background as her gaze landed once more on her father.

The Sergeant marched stiffly towards her, his thumbs looped inside his black belt buckle. His weapon on his hip.

“Hey Dad,” Adele said, trying to sound cheerful. “Catching me in a bit of a, er, moment.”

“I heard,” he said gruffly. “I want to help.” Then, still somewhat stiff, he stepped in hurriedly and hugged her, releasing just as quickly. It felt like planks of wood patting her along the shoulders, and yet it was the tenderest greeting she'd had from her father in a long while.

“Umm, thanks,” she said. Then realizing it might make things awkward to show gratitude for something as simple as a hug, she hastily addressed his comment. “I—I don't know if we need the backup, Dad.”

“Nonsense, I'm coming.”

His tone didn't leave much room for argument.

“Well, Renee's going to be in the SUV,” she said. “I'm sure he won't mind having a German-speaker with him. Most of the cops speak English, though. Just to keep comms clear.”

Her father bobbed his head. “Rainy will be safe with me.”

Adele smirked at the mispronunciation of John's last name. She hid it though, and fished her phone from her pocket, double-checking the pre-programmed number.

“Am I hearing the big guy right?” the Sergeant asked. “You're posing as a hooker?”

Adele raised an eyebrow. “I'll be safe.”

“Psh. Not worried about that. Kinda... scandalous, isn't it?”

She stared. “Dad... I'm not actually a prostitute.”

“No, no I know that. Of course.” He waved a hand dismissively, but still seemed a bit more at ease at this comment.

Adele tried not to roll her eyes, but sometimes it was an absolute mystery trying to figure out how that man's brain worked. No matter; he'd stiff-hugged her and come to help. If that wasn't the Sharp household version of a big, sloppy I love you, then nothing was.

She glanced over at John who was wrapping up the final comments.
