Shimp and Sisler caught Randall Szul on his way out. âCan this wait? Iâm running late for work.â
Notebook already in Shimpâs hand. âWhere do you work, Mr. Szul?â
âBrackenridge Fabricating Works across the river.â Looked at his watch. âIâm on three-to-eleven this week and I really gotta go. Thereâll be traffic on the bridge.â
âWeâll just be a minute.â Shimp pointed to a Camaro with its better days in the rearview. âIs this your car?â
âItâs paid for,â Szul said as if it were not a foregone conclusion.
âWe donât care about that.â Shimp smiled to herself for using a variation of the line Dougherty lived for. âWhere were you on the night of July 18th?â
âWhat day was it?â Szul showed more interest in Sisler checking out his car than in Shimpâs question.
âLast Thursday.â
Szul gave it thought. Or at least pretended to. âThursdays I like to go out after work. Get a few beers and some wings at the Inn.â
âWhat time were you there?â
âIâm not saying I was thereâwhen? Thursday? Iâm just saying what I like to do most Thursdays.â
Sisler leaned in to look through a window. âYou mind if I take a look inside?â
Szul said, âWhat for?â and Shimp didnât like the way he said it.
âIâm curious to see if the primer and Bondo look youâre going for on the outside works as well on the interior.â
Szulâs toe took an edge. âDonât you need a warrant to look inside?â
Sisler still peering through the window. âNot if you say itâs all right. No big deal. I can always come back.â Looked over the roof of the car to Szul. âWith a warrant. Your call.â
âI guess itâs okay.â Szul showed the enthusiasm of a high school kid who had to cut the grass when his friends just scored some.
Sisler tried the driverâs door. Stood and made a key-turning motion. Opened his hands to receive a throw. Szul tossed the keys and Sisler unlocked the door while Shimp kept Szul occupied. âYouâre sure you donât remember what you did last Thursday?â
âWhat did you do that night?â
Shimp pondered no more than a second. âI did laundry while I watched the ballgame. Pirates lost to San Diego. Five to three, I think. It was the night they used four pitchers to get out of the fifth inning.â Szul volunteered no information. âSo, what did you do Thursday the 18th?â
âWhat difference does it make?â
âProbably none.â
âThen why do I have to tell you?â
âYou donât.â Shimp looked over to where Sisler rummaged through the Camaroâs back seat. âIt would look better if we didnât think you stonewalled us and made up a story in the meantime. If it does become important later.â
âThat look any worse than me changing my story?â
âItâs hard to say.â Szulâs expression called bullshit. âIf we come back, weâll know a lot more than we do now. We also understand people make honest mistakes like thinking they were someplace on Thursday when it was really Friday. Letâs make it easier for you: Were you out late that night?â
âHow late?â
âMidnight? One oâclock?â
Szul took his time.
