Chapter 13

Dani grabbed the last baking sheet from the dish drainer, dried it off, and slid it into its assigned slot in the cupboard next to the oven. Some would say that she was more than a little OCD about her kitchen, but Dani preferred to think of herself as extremely organized.

Yes, she’d drawn up a diagram showing the correct location for every pan, dish, utensil, and small appliance, but she liked everything to be in the right spot even if the girls were putting things away. Searching for what she needed while she was in the middle of a recipe annoyed her to no end.

Gathering up the dirty dish towels, dishcloths, and pot holders, she walked into the laundry room at the back of the house. She had an hour or so before Detective Christensen was due to arrive, which was enough time to get a load of linens washed and in the dryer.

As she filled the machine, added detergent, and started it up, Dani’s mind automatically tallied the chores she hadn’t gotten around to yet. She’d returned all the messages left on her voicemail regarding future catering jobs but hadn’t been able to contact a plumber to fix the leaky faucet in Ivy’s bathroom.

With an image of her next water bill increasing by the second, she mentally moved that task to the top of her list. Well, maybe not the very top. That spot was reserved for the electrician she needed to find. The light switch in her sitting room made a buzzing noise every time she flipped it on or off and she was afraid she would get electrocuted one of these days.

Although the mansion may have been mostly renovated when she inherited it, any building its age would always have some things in need of repair. However, Dani would never give up the house’s old-fashioned charm for brand-new construction.

Finished in the laundry room, Dani headed down the hallway toward the staircase. She wanted to take a quick shower and change into something a little nicer than her threadbare denim cutoffs and faded Maroon 5 T-shirt, but the sound of raised voices stopped her before she reached her goal.

Tippi had finally called her parents that morning and told them about being carjacked—probably because she’d had to report the theft to her insurance and was afraid the company would inform her parents. As a result, Mr. and Mrs. Epstein had arrived as Dani and Tippi were beginning the lunch-to-go cleanup. The Epsteins had greeted their daughter with affectionate hugs and tender concern, but evidently in the last half hour the visit had become less loving.

Cringing, Dani hesitated but then shook her head. Even if she sympathized with Tippi’s situation, it wasn’t her business. Dealing with one’s über-successful parents was never a pleasant proposition. And from what Dani could hear coming from the parlor, neither Mr. nor Mrs. Epstein were happy with how their daughter had handled things after the carjacking.

Dani could commiserate with Tippi’s plight. She still hadn’t
