CHAPTER SEVENTEEN

DIGGER SAID GOODBYE TO Mrs. Zorn and walked to her car. The early afternoon sun had warmed the day. She could almost believe spring was here to stay. As she reached the car, Damion came out of the coffee shop a few doors down.

He wore dress slacks and a colored shirt with a maroon tie. And a big smile. "Beth! Wait up."

She wanted to get in the car and speed off, but knew Mrs. Zorn was nearby and a couple people were on the lawn in front of city hall, across the street. She didn't want to provide fodder for gossip.

Digger stood next to the driver's side door of her car, key in hand. She didn't return his greeting. As he got closer, she said, "Damion, I need to get back to Uncle Benjamin's."

His smile did not fade. "I hear it's your place now."

Digger could feel her cheeks redden. "Where did you hear that?"

"Your uncle's lawyer filed his will. A friend in the courthouse told me you inherited his Ancestral Sanctuary." Damion put the name of the property in air quotes.

Digger pushed the key fob to unlock the car. She had known the probated estate would be a matter of public record, but not necessarily today. She'd love to know who had told him.

"So, Beth, I'm sorry I sounded off yesterday."

"And yet, here you are today. Damion, you need to stop pestering me."

The smile faded and then was back in full wattage. "I know I come on too strong sometimes, but whoever treated you better?"

"We aren't going through this again, Damion. We won't need to see each other at work for probably a good while. Stop thinking about me."

The smile turned to a smug grin. "I'll be at work. They didn't let everyone go you know."

"Good for you." Digger opened her car door and inserted one leg.

"I'll see you at the funeral," Damion said. "Do you need any…"

She put her leg back on the pavement. "I will ask the funeral home staff not to admit you. Don't embarrass yourself by trying to get in." She slid into her seat, pulled the door shut and started the car.

For a moment it seemed he would stand in front of the car so she couldn't pull out of the space. Then he seemed to decide better of it and walked back onto the sidewalk.

Still fuming, Digger stopped at the grocery store to pick up more coffee, cheese blocks to slice, crackers, and two cases of bottled water. She wasn't going to make food for a post-funeral group, but she wanted to have a plate of cheese in the fridge and bowls of crackers on the table to get things started.

As she drove up Crooked Leg Road, Digger had to force herself to concentrate on the curvy trek. But she couldn't. What would it take to get Jerk Damion to stop tracking her? Digger had learned too late that he thought he was the universe's gift to women, but why her? She was
