Using this process for culling helps you focus on your best work, and it will help you craft a better experience for your viewers. You arenât necessarily trying to shoot more than you need. It just happens. Some photographers can shoot way less, which is less work in the end, but that just comes down to the style of each photographer. Ultimately I end up shooting way more than I need, and so do most professional photographers; but it isnât necessarily true for everyone. The point is you are going to have to learn how to decide what to keep and what to toss.
Culling your photos will make you look more professional and teach you to be pickier in your craft. Bonus: your clients wonât be overwhelmed with too many images to pick from either.
Edit: The Five-Step Recipe
Now that youâve got your best images selected, itâs time to get into editing. Weâre going to use my Five-Step Editing Recipe to recreate the emotion we experienced when viewing the scene with our own eyes. What follows is not so much a tutorial for photo editing software but a description of the kinds of adjustments you can make to your photos. Lightroom Classic is the application I currently use, but many professional apps will have the same or similar editing options.
I was once visiting a stunning city in Switzerland. There was a lake behind the city and the foothills of the Swiss Alps sitting in the distant background. As I stood there, the sun started to set. It was the perfect golden hour. The light looked incredible as it was flooding through this historic city all over the cobblestone streets and old buildings. It was a truly stunning scene.
Or so I thought. Because this is the picture I got back.
