REWARD AND PUNISHMENT

At this stage of your riding knowledge, you can use and should use only the elementary aids which I have described here for rewarding or punishing your horse. When your legs close against his sides asking for an increase of speed, consider this a punishment, even though a necessary one. When he has responded to the pressure by an increase in the gait, immediately relax that pressure. When your hands close on the reins, asking for a decrease, and the horse comes down to the slower gait, be quick to relax the pressure against his mouth.

Simple and even obvious though these things sound, the clashing of these elementary controls produces serious disobediences, souring the horse’s sides to the rider’s leg and helping to ruin his mouth.

Every time you ride a horse, you are helping either to school or to un-school him. Stay on the horses you can control with ease and security, insist on their obedience to your wishes when you know the horse has understood what it is you are asking of him, and be quick to reward this obedience by relaxing pressure on mouth or sides.
