Mixing a green with more yellow will make it warmer; mixing it with more blue will make it cooler.
Mixing a green with a warm blue makes it duller; a cool blue makes it brighter.
A new colour is created: red and yellow together make orange.
To make a colour darker, another is added: here a warm red is added to a cool blue to make a dull violet. Adding white lightens the mix.

Here Ultramarine Blue and Yellow Ochre were mixed on the palette for the green of the water, but for the background buildings Cadmium Red was brushed into a damp Ultramarine wash and the colours were allowed to blend on the paper.
