Ott tumbled to the ground with the force of Henry’s tug. He awkwardly scrambled to his feet, pulling a small dagger from his waistband and brandishing it as he stood. “What? How?”

Henry shrugged, gazing overhead at the shimmering blue shell. “It has to be similar to the barrier you guys had at Marais with your stones.”

Ott reached his hand through the barrier and pulled it back, staring at it with wonder. “No, you are able to see through that protection, and it prevents most lower-level monsters from being able to cross. This... this is something new.”

Henry scanned the area inside the barrier. Huge reddish-brown cliffs towered above a thick layer of trees, surrounding the camouflaged valley. The lush green forest in front of them obscured everything beyond the trees, even though he could hear the unmistakable sound of rushing water in the distance. “Wouldn’t a protection barrier prevent us from entering? This must only serve to hide whatever is inside.”

Ott held up a long scaly finger. “I agree, however, do not assume that whatever is in here is going to be friendly.

Henry walked down the large hill without hesitation. Ott called out in a loud whisper. “Wait! You do not know what is down there!”

Ignoring him, Henry waved an arm, motioning Ott to follow. The tree line was just below them at the bottom of the hill, magnificent oak and ash trees standing tall and close together, creating a natural barrier. Their branches were thick with emerald green, orange, and lemon-yellow leaves that danced in the gentle breeze. Strong, thick bushes filled the gaps between the trees, making a trek through the forest impassable.

A soft buzzing rose in the distance and grew louder. Henry turned searching eyes in its direction. “What’s that?”

Ott grabbed his staff tightly and remained motionless. “Don’t move. They will not see us if you don’t move.”

Henry sensed the urgency in Ott’s voice and froze. The buzzing increased, and he caught the outline of a large creature flying their way, nearly the size of a horse.

Henry tensed and planted his feet, trying his best to not get blown over. The creature had a long, dark blue body and multiple large, slender, translucent wings. It resembled a dragonfly. Not resembled... it was a freaking dragonfly.

It passed harmlessly above them and continued out of sight. The wind died and the leaves on the trees settled as it disappeared around the bend. Henry turned toward Ott to discover that the lizard’s bags had been scattered and his staff thrown over twenty feet away by the gale.

Henry handed Ott one of his scattered bags. “Here. What the hell was that thing?”

Ott grabbed the bag and tied it back around his belt before picking up his other items and staff. “Swamp Fisker.”

Henry frowned in confusion. “A what?”

“Fiskers are very common around the northern lands. They collect anurite through their wings and take it back to their nests. Some of the purest magical material around, once they are done with it. Good luck finding a nest, though.
