‘Can you put your hand on the top of your head?’

Robert raised his eyebrows, and opened his mouth.

‘The top of your head, Robert. Can you put your hand on your head?’

His eyes roamed around the room. It was striking to watch how literally he would search for an answer, sometimes. He lifted his hands. He rubbed them across his face, slowly and firmly, as though he were washing.

‘Head,’ William said, softly, patting the top of his own head.

‘Heh, heh, head,’ Robert repeated. He moved his hands around the side of his head. He was watching for a reaction from William. He didn’t touch his face again, but it was clear that he didn’t know where to put his hands. He moved them around his head, waiting for a response. He rubbed his ears.

‘Head,’ William said, patting the top of his own head again.

‘Heh – head,’ Robert said, rubbing his temples.

‘Now, can you touch your nose?’

There was a long pause while the information filtered through Robert’s brain. The words had to take a longer way around now, as Anna understood it. She could measure their progress by the pace of his blinks. He didn’t look to be in any hurry. William tried again.

‘Your nose. Can you touch your nose?’

Robert looked down at himself. He looked at each arm in turn, and then back at William.

‘Ha! Christ. Well.’

‘Can you put a finger on your nose?’

Robert slowly brought his hand towards his face, and touched his nose.

‘Very good. Nose. Can you say nose?’

‘Christ, obviously. Nose. Nose.’

‘Excellent. Great. Now then. Can you tell me the name for this?’ William tapped his own shoulder, and then leaned forward and tapped Robert’s. ‘What do we call that?’

Robert moved his hand down to his own shoulder. His eyes widened, in understanding. His mouth opened and closed.

‘Soul. Soul, soul. Jar. Soul, jar. Yes. Soul, jar. Obviously. Okay. Yes. Soul, jars. Well. Soldier, soldier.’

‘Shoulder, Robert. Shoulder. Shh, shh, shoulder.’

‘Shh, shh. Shh. Soldier. Yes yes. Soldier. Shhhhholdier.’

‘Shoulder?’
