CHAPTER TEN
Penny and Jim left the castle in high spirits, having had a wonderful evening. Jim was clutching a list of items that Hamish had sold through Colin, although neither he nor Penny were quite sure whether it was at all useful. A quick glance had revealed none of the items mentioned earlier by Hélène.
âYou know,â said Penny, âHélène wasnât exactly forthcoming about what sheâd sold for Colin. She was a bit cagey, even.â
âAye,â Jim agreed, âshe knows a lot more than sheâs letting on.â
âWhich is why I was thinking, well, what with her being out with Johnny for the evening, we might take a wee peek at her records?â
Jim braked far more sharply than the bend warranted.
âNo. God, what is it with you and breaking into places?â
Penny sighed. âYouâre right. Iâm hardly dressed for it. Drop me off at Eileenâs and Iâll see what sheâs managed to dig up on Colin. Oh, and can we stop at the supermarket on the way? This is going to involve wine.â
âAlright, Miss Bossyknickers,â said Jim, relieved that sheâd dropped the subject so easily. âWhy canât I come to Eileenâs?â
âI thought youâd be going home to charge up the ice cream van.â
âI hate to say this, but youâre right. I need to get Colin tucked in for the night.â
âAlso, Eileen and I are long overdue for a girly chat. Just wait âtil she hears that Chris asked me for coffee. For goodnessâ sake, Jim, will you stop braking so hard!â
âYouâre not actually going for a coffee with him, are you? I mean, have you heard the man speak? Sounds like heâs gotâ¦got⦠the Queen shoved up his arse.â
âOi! You do not mess with her Maj,â Penny warned him.
âSorry,â said Jim, âShe was the poshest person I could think of. But seriously, youâre not going out with him, right?â
âJeeze, itâs only coffee. Itâs not like weâre getting married. Although,â Penny grinned, âcan you imagine if I did a Harry Met Sally in the middle of Cuppachino?â
âThatâs not even funny. You canât go out with him. The manâs an arsehole.â
âYou liked him fine at dinner. I heard the two of you making plans to go for a pint.â
âWell, that was then, and this is now. Heâs an arsehole. Connard, arschloch and gilipollas. Ha! See? I was paying attention at school!â
They bickered all the way to Port Vik harbour, where Penny slammed the car door and stalked towards Eileenâs cottage.
âAnd Iâm not fucking giving you a lift home!â Jim shouted after her.
âAnd Iâm not flippinâ asking you to, you big twat,â Penny shouted back, before stomping up the lane to let herself in Eileen and Kennyâs back door.
Eileen looked up from her laptop at the sound of the door. She watched Penny kick off her shoes in the porch and noted that her friend had a face like thunder. Jim again. Why couldnât those two just admit they fancied each other and have a good snog? Why did they have to make it so complicated? In Eileenâs opinion, if you fancied someone, you snogged the face off them.
