Chapter Thirteen â Thursday afternoon
I was running late for lunch with Matt, and he was already sat at a table when I got to the pub. I plonked myself down in the chair opposite him and apologised profusely.
âIâm so sorry Matt. There was another fire last nightââ
âWhat?â He sat up straight and leant over the table towards me. âAre you alright? How bad was it? What about the others?â
âItâs fine. No one was hurt and very little damage. It was in one of the kitchens. Billâs dog woke everyone up, so we all got out in good time.â
He sat back in relief. âWhat caused it?â
âEr⦠Wellâ¦â
âIt was arson, wasnât it? Again!â He sat back up. It was like watching a Jack-in-the-box. âJetâ¦â He trailed off, shaking his head. âI just want you to be safe. All of you,â he finished, looking down at his menu.
âI have a list,â I said. In Crete and in Switzerland, we had enjoyed drawing up lists of possible suspects. I hoped reminding him of that would brighten his mood.
âOf course you do.â He gave a small smile. It wasnât much, but it was a start. âTell me then.â
âOh, shouldnât we order food first? I didnât get breakfast.â
He laughed â yay, result! We broke off the conversation to read the menus then both decided on the same thing weâd had every other time weâd visited the Crown. Matt went up to the bar to order and came back bearing two lemonades and two sets of cutlery wrapped tightly in paper napkins.
âOk, Holmes, go,â he said once heâd sat down.
âWell, itâs a toughie as no-one really liked Mr Ellington. On the other hand most of the potential suspects are living up the hall from me.â
He groaned. âPlease donât remind me of that.â
âSorry.â I gave him an ingratiating smile. âTop of my list has to be his sister, Sarah. As far as I can tell, she stands to inherit so is the obvious choice.â
âDo you know how they got along?â
âNo. But he was a douchebag soâ¦â
âOk, I get it.â
âNext are all my neighbours. He suggested to Cassie that she sleep with him in exchange for a reduction in rent.â
âJust a reduction? I bet she wasnât happy about that!â He chuckled and took a sip of lemonade.
âYes, well. She seemed pretty angry about it. But I canât imagine her killing anyone. And why would she? Thereâs nothing for her to gain.â
âTrue. I canât see her as a murderer, either.â
I took a drink and continued. âThen thereâs Bill. Heâs been hiding a dog in his flat â and in the hostel.â
âAnd Iâm guessing your lease prohibits pets?â
âExactly. Itâs possible Mr Ellington discovered Bilbo and threatened to kick Bill out.â
âBut then burning down the house to avoid being evicted seems a bit counter-productive.â
I sighed. âTrue. Next thereâs George. Heâs been playing in a poker game that Mr Ellington runs and apparently has huge losses. So heâs deeply in debt to Mr Ellington and terrified Annie, thatâs his wife, will find out and leave him.
