Chapter Thirteen – Thursday afternoon

I was running late for lunch with Matt, and he was already sat at a table when I got to the pub. I plonked myself down in the chair opposite him and apologised profusely.

“I’m so sorry Matt. There was another fire last night—”

“What?” He sat up straight and leant over the table towards me. “Are you alright? How bad was it? What about the others?”

“It’s fine. No one was hurt and very little damage. It was in one of the kitchens. Bill’s dog woke everyone up, so we all got out in good time.”

He sat back in relief. “What caused it?”

“Er… Well…”

“It was arson, wasn’t it? Again!” He sat back up. It was like watching a Jack-in-the-box. “Jet…” He trailed off, shaking his head. “I just want you to be safe. All of you,” he finished, looking down at his menu.

“I have a list,” I said. In Crete and in Switzerland, we had enjoyed drawing up lists of possible suspects. I hoped reminding him of that would brighten his mood.

“Of course you do.” He gave a small smile. It wasn’t much, but it was a start. “Tell me then.”

“Oh, shouldn’t we order food first? I didn’t get breakfast.”

He laughed – yay, result! We broke off the conversation to read the menus then both decided on the same thing we’d had every other time we’d visited the Crown. Matt went up to the bar to order and came back bearing two lemonades and two sets of cutlery wrapped tightly in paper napkins.

“Ok, Holmes, go,” he said once he’d sat down.

“Well, it’s a toughie as no-one really liked Mr Ellington. On the other hand most of the potential suspects are living up the hall from me.”

He groaned. “Please don’t remind me of that.”

“Sorry.” I gave him an ingratiating smile. “Top of my list has to be his sister, Sarah. As far as I can tell, she stands to inherit so is the obvious choice.”

“Do you know how they got along?”

“No. But he was a douchebag so…”

“Ok, I get it.”

“Next are all my neighbours. He suggested to Cassie that she sleep with him in exchange for a reduction in rent.”

“Just a reduction? I bet she wasn’t happy about that!” He chuckled and took a sip of lemonade.

“Yes, well. She seemed pretty angry about it. But I can’t imagine her killing anyone. And why would she? There’s nothing for her to gain.”

“True. I can’t see her as a murderer, either.”

I took a drink and continued. “Then there’s Bill. He’s been hiding a dog in his flat – and in the hostel.”

“And I’m guessing your lease prohibits pets?”

“Exactly. It’s possible Mr Ellington discovered Bilbo and threatened to kick Bill out.”

“But then burning down the house to avoid being evicted seems a bit counter-productive.”

I sighed. “True. Next there’s George. He’s been playing in a poker game that Mr Ellington runs and apparently has huge losses. So he’s deeply in debt to Mr Ellington and terrified Annie, that’s his wife, will find out and leave him.
