Chapter 12

I FELT COMPLETELY EXHAUSTED as I pondered whether the Heavens had truly ordained this ordeal for me, or perhaps mistook me for some hero from the ancient legends.

Constructing a stable platform for my group took three grueling months. During that time, I cursed my “brilliant” plan countless times, yet persisted. The main challenge, as often happened, awaited me at the very end. A massive hovering mass of light yellow jelly harboring a deep-sea monster within its depths, which had also ensnared Vyllea and Guerlon, had set its sights on me. Foolishly placing a platform too close, I had a chunk of temporal anomaly crash onto it from above. The droplet lingered on the platform briefly — finding no living being, it slid off, forcing me to devise alternative routes away from high formations to avoid unexpected surprises.

Finally, the path was laid out, and I moved to the second phase — reducing the amount of light yellow jelly on Guerlon. I decided to extract him first, but wanted to perfect the rescue method beforehand. Thus, I needed to do some hunting — my plan required a sacrifice. A Bronze-ranked Candidate stage wolf had ventured too close to me at its peril — possibly sent by his kin to scout the area. It could have returned to his pack a trailblazer and a hero, but it didn’t, falling prey to a Golden-ranked Candidate Taoist instead. I had indeed formed four nodes, shielding myself completely from the energy of Circle Zero. I had to empty several temporal traps to harvest beast essences, and then diligently absorb their energy, wrapping it around the forming nodes. Each time, it became harder to detach from this process, so I stopped at four nodes, fearing that starting a fifth would be my undoing, leaving me forever stranded in the world of energy, craving more pleasure. It was unpleasant to admit, but I really needed Vyllea.

I was therefore about to conduct my first experiment in extracting living bodies from an anomaly. The wolf whimpered fearfully, wrapped into a cocoon, and I genuinely pitied the beast. Yet I had no right to end its misery and fear by granting the wolf a swift death. Those accursed temporal anomalies disregarded the dead, craving only the living!

Thus, the wolf was out of luck. I hoisted it over my shoulder as I made my way to my group. I avoided using the platform — the anomalies would remain calm for the first thirty minutes. Upon reaching my destination, I laid the twitching animal near a trap encasing half a human body. The light green jelly seized the opportunity, enveloping the wolf. The subject froze, and I grinned in satisfaction — the volume of the temporal bubble hiding the corpse had significantly reduced. With plenty of time left before the anomalies started moving, I dared another experiment. This time, I used my latest invention — a stick with an end resembling a splayed hand. Pushing an object out of a temporal anomaly at a single point was fraught: any bend would lead to destruction.
