Take These Chains

THE COURT And I am ordering that the defendant not to be chained. I’ve determined that there is no way that the Court can prevent exposure to assure that the jurors will not be able to see the chains, and there’s no way that the Court can have a trial if he is chained. So I’m ordering that he not be chained. The marshals can get enough people in here. It was the marshal that called it to the attention of the clerk that the jurors saw the chains. Now, if there’s a problem, they can just shoot him. That’s the way to get the security. If he creates a problem, shoot him. Don’t smile, Mr. Defendant, because if you create a problem, you’re a dead man.
